Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Alif-Lam-Ra (الر): These are among the Huruf al-Muqatta'at (disjointed letters) that appear at the beginning of some Quranic chapters. Their precise meaning is known only to Allah, yet they serve as a miraculous challenge, demonstrating that the Quran—composed of the very letters of human speech—remains inimitable by any human or jinn.
- Uhkimat (أُحْكِمَتْ): Perfected, made precise and firm, free from any flaw, contradiction, or weakness—both in wording and meaning.
- Fussilat (فُصِّلَتْ): Detailed and clearly expounded, distinguished into distinct rulings, commands, prohibitions, promises, and warnings.
- Min ladun (مِن لَّدُنْ): From the presence of, directly from.
- Hakim (حَكِيمٍ): The All-Wise, whose every decree and act is perfectly measured and purposeful.
- Khabir (خَبِيرٍ): The All-Aware, who knows all things—the hidden and the manifest, the outward and the inward—and what truly benefits His creation.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah begins this noble chapter with the disjointed letters *Alif-Lam-Ra*, a reminder of the miraculous nature of the Quran. Though these letters are part of the Arabic alphabet that the Arabs themselves used in their daily speech, they were utterly unable to produce anything like this divine Book—proving that it is indeed the Word of Allah, not the work of any human.
Then Allah describes this magnificent Book with two profound qualities. First, its verses are perfected (uhkimat)—meaning they are flawlessly constructed, harmonious in their wording and meaning, with no contradiction, no inconsistency, and no deficiency. Every word sits in its precise place, every sentence flows with unmatched eloquence, and every message carries absolute truth. Second, its verses are detailed (fussilat)—meaning they are clearly expounded and elaborated upon, covering all that humanity needs: the lawful and the unlawful, commands and prohibitions, promises of reward and warnings of punishment, stories of past nations, and guidance for every aspect of life.
These two qualities—perfection and clarity—come from the presence of the All-Wise, the All-Aware (min ladun Hakimin Khabir). It is not the product of human intellect or guesswork; rather, it descends from the One whose wisdom encompasses all things and whose knowledge penetrates every secret. He knows exactly what His servants need, what will reform their hearts, and what will lead them to success in this life and the Hereafter.
This verse calls every believer to stand in awe of this divine Book. When you open the Quran, you are not reading mere words—you are engaging with a perfectly crafted revelation from the All-Wise and All-Aware. Its perfection invites your trust, and its clarity invites your action. So let your heart find rest in its rulings, your mind find satisfaction in its proofs, and your soul find guidance in its light. For the One who sent it down knows you better than you know yourself, and He has placed in this Book exactly what will heal your heart, purify your soul, and lead you to eternal bliss.
