Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zafir (زَفِيرٌ): A deep, harsh exhaling of breath, repeated due to intense agony and sorrow.
- Shaheeq (شَهِيقٌ): A prolonged, high-pitched inhaling sound, following the zafir, reflecting extreme distress.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse paints a vivid and sobering picture of the fate of those who are wretched—those who, in this worldly life, persisted in disbelief, corrupted their faith, and filled their scales with evil deeds. For them, the Fire is their final abode. Within it, they will produce sounds of indescribable ugliness: the *zafir*, a breath forced out from the depths of their chests under the crushing weight of torment, and the *shaheeq*, a sharp, drawn-out intake of breath—together forming the most hideous and heart-wrenching cries imaginable. These sounds are not merely physical; they are the echoes of souls shattered by regret, trapped in a reality of their own making.
This is a destiny of permanence for those who rejected the truth outright—an eternity of suffering that never pauses or fades. However, the mercy of Allah, the Most Just, remains a beacon of hope even within this severe warning: for the believers who fell into sin but died upon monotheism, their stay in the Fire is not eternal, for their Lord—who does whatever He wills—may extract them after a period of purification, by His grace and through the intercession of His righteous servants. This verse thus balances awe with hope: it terrifies the heedless, yet reassures the sincere that Allah’s mercy encompasses all, and that His will is absolute and unstoppable.
A Da’wah Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart before it is too late. The sounds of the Fire are not mere metaphors—they are realities that await those who turn away from their Creator. But Allah, in His infinite kindness, has given you this very moment to change your course. He has opened the door of repentance wide, and His mercy is nearer to you than your own jugular vein. Do not let the whispers of Shaytan convince you that you are beyond redemption. Every prayer, every sincere step toward Allah, every tear shed in regret extinguishes a portion of that Fire for you. Run to your Lord now, for He is the One who says “Be” and it is—and He has willed for you success, not ruin, if only you choose Him.
