Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Yawma ya'ti" — The Day that comes, referring to the Day of Resurrection, when all people are gathered before their Lord.
- "La takallamu nafsun" — No soul will speak.
- "Illa bi-idhnihi" — Except by His (Allah's) permission.
- "Shaqiyy" — Wretched; one who is destined for punishment and misery.
- "Sa'id" — Blessed; one who is destined for happiness and eternal bliss.
Explanation of the Verse:
On that momentous Day — the Day of Resurrection when all of humanity is assembled before their Creator — no soul will utter a single word except by Allah’s explicit permission. The entire creation will stand in complete silence, overwhelmed by the Majesty of the Almighty. Even the prophets, the angels, and the righteous will not speak unless Allah grants them leave, whether to intercede or to offer a plea. This absolute silence underscores the supreme sovereignty of Allah on that Day; no voice rises, no argument is made, and no excuse is presented without His consent.
Then, the verse divides all of humanity into two ultimate categories: the wretched (shaqiyy), who are destined for the torment of Hellfire as a consequence of their disbelief and sins, and the blessed (sa'id), who are honored with the everlasting bliss of Paradise by the grace and mercy of Allah. This division is not arbitrary but is the just outcome of how each soul lived its life in this world — whether in obedience to Allah or in defiance of His commands.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse paints a vivid picture of a Day when every tongue is tied, and every heart is trembling. Imagine standing in that vast plain, unable to speak a word unless Allah wills it for you. Would you not want to be among those who are granted permission to speak — and more importantly, among those who are counted as the blessed ones? The path to that blessedness is open to you right now, in this very moment. Turn to your Lord in sincere repentance, embrace His guidance, and live a life that pleases Him. For on that Day, neither wealth, nor status, nor family will avail you — only your faith and your deeds will speak on your behalf, and only Allah's mercy will save you. Do not delay, for that Day is nearer than you think, and the decision of your eternal destiny is being written with every breath you take. May Allah make us among the blessed and grant us His mercy on that awe-inspiring Day.
