Meanings of Key Words:

  • "Tarkanoo" (تَرْكَنُوا) — To incline, lean, or rest upon something with a sense of comfort and trust. It implies a deep emotional or psychological attachment, not merely a physical proximity.
  • "Fatamassakumu" (فَتَمَسَّكُمُ) — That which touches, afflicts, or seizes you directly. Here, it refers to the Fire of Hell reaching and engulfing the person.
  • "Awliyaa" (أَوْلِيَاء) — Protectors, guardians, or allies who can defend and support you. In this context, it means those who could save you from Allah's punishment.
  • "Tunsaroo" (تُنصَرُون) — To be given victory or help against an enemy or calamity. Here, it means being rescued or aided in escaping divine punishment.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse carries a profound and timeless warning from Allah to the believers: "And do not incline toward those who have wronged, lest the Fire touch you, and you will have no protectors other than Allah, then you will not be helped."

The command here is clear and emphatic — Allah forbids the believers from leaning toward the oppressors and wrongdoers, whether they are disbelievers, tyrants, or those who persist in injustice. The word "rukoon" (ركون) is stronger than just "being around" them; it means to feel at ease with them, to trust them, to adopt their ways, to flatter them, or to silently approve of their wrongdoing. It includes any form of compromise with injustice — whether through words of support, acts of cooperation, or even a heart that begins to admire their worldly success and influence.

The consequence is severe: "lest the Fire touch you." This means that even a slight inclination toward the unjust can draw a person toward the punishment of Hell. It is a spiritual contamination — just as fire spreads from one object to another, the sin of supporting or leaning toward oppression can burn the heart and lead one astray.

Then Allah removes every false hope of rescue: "and you will have no protectors other than Allah." If you abandon Allah's command and seek comfort in the company of wrongdoers, do not think that they will save you on the Day of Judgment. They cannot shield you from Allah's wrath. Your only true protector is Allah Himself, and by turning away from His guidance, you have lost that protection.

Finally, the verse closes with a crushing reality: "then you will not be helped." No one will come to your aid — not your former allies, not your worldly connections, not even your own deeds, for they have been corrupted by your compromise with injustice.

This verse is a call to moral integrity and spiritual independence. It teaches the believer that true honor lies in standing with truth, even if it means standing alone. The company of the righteous is a source of strength, while the company of the oppressors is a slow poison that destroys both this life and the Hereafter.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, this verse is not merely a historical command — it is a living guidance for every age and every society. In our daily lives, we are constantly faced with choices: do we speak against injustice, or do we stay silent? Do we support the truth, or do we flatter the powerful? Do we befriend those who oppress others, or do we distance ourselves for the sake of Allah?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith." (Sahih Muslim)

This verse reminds us that our relationship with Allah is the foundation of our safety. When we cling to Him, we are protected. When we lean on the wrongdoers, we lose everything. So let us purify our hearts, guard our associations, and always choose the side of truth — for Allah's promise is true, and His help is near for those who remain steadfast.

May Allah keep us firm upon His path and protect us from the company of the unjust. Ameen.

📜 Verse 111-115 — Hud

And indeed, each [of the believers and disbelievers] - your Lord will fully compensate them for their deeds. Indeed, He is Acquainted with what they do.
So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to Allah], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.
And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest you be touched by the Fire, and you would not have other than Allah any protectors; then you would not be helped.
And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.
And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.
