Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الصَّيْحَةُ (As-Sayhah): The overwhelming, deafening cry or blast — in this context, a terrifying sound from heaven that destroyed the wrongdoers.
- جَاثِمِينَ (Jāthimīn): Those who fall dead, collapsed on their knees or faces, motionless and lifeless, clinging to the ground.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the decree of Allah’s punishment arrived for the people of Shu‘ayb — a punishment that was inevitable and long-awaited after their persistent denial and corruption — Allah, in His infinite mercy, saved His Prophet Shu‘ayb and the believers who had remained steadfast with him. This salvation was not earned by their own merit alone but was a pure gift of rahmah (mercy) from Allah, a mercy that embraces the righteous and shields them from the consequences of the wicked.
As for those who had wronged themselves and others through disbelief, arrogance, and cheating in trade, the Sayhah — a single, terrifying blast from the heavens — seized them suddenly. It was so powerful that their souls departed their bodies instantly, and by morning they lay in their own homes, jāthimīn: fallen dead, motionless, their faces pressed to the dust, their bodies lifeless like statues of stone. No movement, no breath, no escape — a stark and humbling end for those who once boasted of their wealth and numbers.
This scene is a profound reminder for every generation: the fate of the wrongdoers is sealed when they reject the messengers of Allah, while the believers are never abandoned. The mercy of Allah is the ultimate refuge — it rescues the faithful from every trial, whether in this world or the next. Yet the punishment of Allah is equally certain for those who persist in oppression and turn away from His guidance.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, look at how quickly the tables turned! The people of Shu‘ayb were mighty in their cities, confident in their trade and prosperity, yet a single cry from the unseen reduced them to lifeless forms in their own homes. Where is their power now? Where are their treasures? This is the reality of this fleeting world — it can be taken away in an instant.
But see the beauty of Allah’s mercy: the believers who held firm, despite their small numbers and the mockery of their community, were saved and honored. Their faith was their shield, and Allah’s mercy was their victory. This is the promise of Allah to every believer who remains patient and steadfast: "Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good" (An-Nahl 16:128).
So, my beloved reader, let this story soften your heart. Turn to Allah before the cry comes, and hold onto His rope of mercy through faith and righteous deeds. For the door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast — but the punishment of Allah is also severe for those who persist in wrongdoing. Choose the path of Shu‘ayb and the believers, and you will find salvation in this life and the next. And never despair of Allah’s mercy, for He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
