Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • سَيَصْلَىٰ (Sa-yasla): He will enter and be burned by it; he will endure its heat and suffering.
  • نَارًا (Nāran): Fire.
  • ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ (Dhāti lahab): Having flames; blazing and fiercely burning.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse delivers a decisive and terrifying promise to Abu Lahab, the uncle of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who was among the most hostile enemies of Islam. Allah declares that he will enter a Fire that possesses intense, roaring flames—a fire that is not merely hot, but one that blazes and leaps with fury. This punishment is his destiny on the Day of Judgment, where he will taste the ultimate consequence of his arrogance, mockery, and relentless opposition to the message of truth. The mention of "having flames" emphasizes the severity and intensity of the torment, leaving no room for doubt about the fate of those who dedicate their lives to fighting the guidance of Allah. Furthermore, as the broader context of the chapter indicates, his wife—who used to scatter thorns in the Prophet’s path to harm him—will share in this punishment, highlighting that those who aid in evil are equally accountable.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse serves as a profound reminder of the justice of Allah. No matter how powerful, wealthy, or influential a person may be in this world, they cannot escape the consequences of their actions in the Hereafter. Abu Lahab was a man of status and pride, yet his wealth and lineage availed him nothing against the decree of Allah. For the believer, this is a call to reflect: if such a severe punishment awaits those who actively fought against the truth, how much more careful must we be in our own conduct? Let this verse inspire you to hold firmly to the rope of Allah, to purify your intentions, and to distance yourself from arrogance and hostility toward the faith. The Qur'an is not merely a book of stories—it is a living guide, warning us of the fire and guiding us to the eternal bliss of Paradise. Embrace its message today, and let the fear of that blazing Fire motivate you to seek the mercy of the Most Merciful, who forgives all sins for those who turn to Him sincerely.
