📜

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Wa-mra'atuhu — "And his wife" — referring to Umm Jamil, the wife of Abu Lahab, whose real name was Arwa bint Harb, the sister of Abu Sufyan.
  • Hammālata al-ḥaṭab — "Carrier of firewood" — this carries a dual meaning: literally, she used to gather thorny wood and scatter it in the path of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to harm him; and metaphorically, she carried the "firewood" of her sins and evil deeds, which would fuel her punishment in Hellfire.

The Interpretation:

In this verse, Allah Almighty completes the picture of the punishment awaiting Abu Lahab by including his wife, Umm Jamil, in the same fate. She was not merely a bystander to her husband's hostility — she was an active participant in the campaign of persecution against the Prophet (peace be upon him). Her particular method of cruelty was to collect thorny branches and sharp wood, then scatter them along the paths where the Prophet walked, hoping to wound his blessed feet and cause him pain.

The Qur'anic description of her as "the carrier of firewood" is profoundly precise and layered in meaning. On one level, it describes her literal actions — she physically carried bundles of thorns to harm the Messenger of Allah. On a deeper level, it symbolizes the weight of her sins: every thorn she gathered, every step she obstructed, every intention to hurt a beloved Prophet of Allah became "firewood" that she was unknowingly collecting for her own blazing punishment in the Hereafter.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that those who dedicate their lives to opposing the truth and harming the righteous will not escape Allah's justice — neither they nor their partners in evil. The wife who supported her husband in his arrogance and cruelty shared his fate, just as in goodness, a supportive spouse shares in the reward.

A Call to Reflection:

How beautiful is the justice of Allah! The very woman who thought she was cleverly plotting against the Prophet (peace be upon him) was, in reality, gathering fuel for her own eternal fire. She believed she was causing harm, but she was only harming herself. This is the fate of all who mock the messengers of Allah and strive to extinguish the light of truth — their schemes only tighten the rope of their own destruction.

Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to examine your own actions. Are you carrying "firewood" of sins that will one day burn against you? Or are you carrying deeds of goodness that will light your path to Paradise? The choice is yours, and the time to choose is now. Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open — but the firewood of evil deeds, if left unrepented, will one day become a blazing reality. Turn to Allah today, and let every step you take be toward His pleasure, not away from it.
