Word Meanings:

  • Jeediha (جِيدِهَا): Her neck.
  • Hablon (حَبْلٌ): A rope or cord.
  • Min Masad (مِن مَّسَدٍ): Made of twisted palm-fiber rope, or a tightly plaited cord; also interpreted as a chain of iron in Hellfire. The root word *masd* refers to firm, strong twisting or plaiting.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse completes the vivid depiction of the fate awaiting the wife of Abu Lahab, who used to spread thorns and obstacles in the path of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and slander him. Allah informs us that around her neck will be a rope of twisted palm-fiber — or, as some scholars explain, a chain of iron forged in the fires of Hell. This rope is not merely an ornament of disgrace; it is the very means by which she will be dragged and pulled into the depths of the Fire, then hurled down to its lowest depths. The description is both literal and symbolic: just as she used to carry bundles of thorns to harm the Prophet’s path, she will now carry the instrument of her own punishment around her neck for eternity.

The imagery here is striking and serves as a powerful reminder of divine justice. The same neck that once turned away in arrogance from the truth, and the same hands that once worked to spread mischief, will be bound and humiliated in the most severe manner. No wealth, no status, no family ties — not even being the aunt of the Prophet — could save her from this fate, because what matters with Allah is faith and righteous deeds, not lineage or worldly position.

A Call to Reflection:

This scene should make every believer pause and reflect deeply. If such a severe punishment awaited those who actively opposed the message of Islam with mockery and harm, then how careful must we be in our own conduct? The Qur’an does not present this as a distant, abstract warning — it describes a reality that is certain to come. Yet, in His infinite mercy, Allah has given us the opportunity to turn back to Him, to purify our intentions, and to use our tongues and limbs in ways that please Him rather than displease Him.

Let this verse inspire you to check your own heart: Are there any traces of arrogance, mockery, or hostility toward the truth? Do you use your words to build or to destroy? The rope around her neck is a reminder that every action has a consequence — but also that the door of repentance remains open for those who seek it before it is too late. Embrace the guidance of the Qur’an, love the Prophet (peace be upon him) sincerely, and strive to be among those who are saved, not among those who are dragged. May Allah protect us all from such a fate and grant us the sweetness of faith in this life and the next.
