Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Waswas (الْوَسْوَاسِ): The one who whispers constantly — referring to Satan (Shaytan) who casts evil suggestions into the hearts of people. It is also one of his names.
- Al-Khannas (الْخَنَّاسِ): The one who retreats, withdraws, and hides. This describes Satan's behavior: he withdraws and shrinks back when the name of Allah is mentioned.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of Surah An-Nas, where Allah teaches us to seek His protection from the evil of Satan, described here as *al-Waswas al-Khannas* — the whispering retreater.
Satan is called *al-Waswas* because his primary method of misguidance is through subtle, persistent whispering. He does not confront people openly; rather, he sneaks into their hearts and minds, planting doubts, fears, desires, and evil suggestions. He whispers when a person is heedless of Allah — during moments of weakness, distraction, or forgetfulness — and he works tirelessly to turn a person away from righteousness.
He is called *al-Khannas* because of his characteristic of retreating and withdrawing. When a believer remembers Allah, mentions His name, or seeks His refuge, Satan immediately shrinks back, retreats, and loses his grip. He is like a predator that attacks when its prey is unaware but flees when confronted. This name highlights both Satan's cunning persistence and his inherent weakness — he has no power over those who sincerely turn to Allah.
The verse teaches us a profound truth: Satan's power is limited. He can only whisper, suggest, and tempt — but he cannot force anyone to sin. His influence thrives in the absence of Allah's remembrance. The moment a servant turns to Allah, seeks His protection, and strengthens their connection with Him, Satan's whispers lose their effect and he retreats in humiliation.
This is a beautiful reminder of Allah's care for His servants. He does not leave us alone in this battle against evil — He tells us exactly how to protect ourselves and assures us that His protection is greater than any evil. By seeking refuge in Allah, we are not merely uttering words; we are activating a divine shield that repels the whispers of Satan and keeps our hearts pure and focused on our Creator.
Let this verse inspire you to make the remembrance of Allah your constant companion. Whenever you feel evil thoughts, doubts, or temptations creeping into your heart, know that Satan is at work — and know that his weakness is exposed by your remembrance of Allah. Say *A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim* (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan), and watch how the whispers fade away. Allah is always near, always listening, and always ready to protect those who turn to Him with sincerity.
