Tafsir (Explanation):
Prophet Ya‘qūb (peace be upon him) addressed his sons with firmness and wisdom after they had already betrayed his trust once regarding Yūsuf. He said: "I will not send him (Binyamīn) with you — no matter how much you plead or promise — until you give me a solemn, binding oath in the name of Allah that you will most certainly bring him back to me, unless you are completely overpowered and utterly defeated, leaving no way for you to protect him or return." This condition was not born of distrust alone, but of a father's deep love and his duty to safeguard the child of his beloved wife, Rahīl, who had passed away. He wanted a guarantee that would hold them accountable before Allah Himself.
When his sons, seeing his resolve and understanding his pain, gave him their firm covenant and swore by Allah to fulfill his condition, Ya‘qūb then said: "Allah is the Witness and Guardian over what we say." With these words, he elevated the matter beyond mere human promises — he placed it under the watchful eye of Allah, the All-Seeing, the All-Knowing, who never breaks His trust and who holds every soul accountable for its words and deeds.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: when you make a promise, especially one involving the rights of others, let it be a promise made before Allah. Let your word be your bond, and let your covenant be witnessed by the One who never forgets. And when you entrust your loved ones to someone, entrust them to Allah first, for He is the best of guardians. Ya‘qūb did not rely solely on his sons' words — he relied on Allah, and that reliance brought him peace. How beautiful is the believer's state when he knows that Allah is the Wakīl over all his affairs — the One who sees, protects, and fulfills what is best for His servants. Let this be a call to every Muslim: be truthful in your promises, honor your covenants, and place your trust in Allah, for He is sufficient as a Guardian and Witness.
