Tafsir (Explanation):
When Ya'qub (peace be upon him) prepared his sons to travel to Egypt, he gave them a final piece of fatherly advice: "O my sons, do not enter through one single gate, but enter through separate gates." This was not a mere suggestion born of worldly caution alone — it was a protective measure. He feared the evil eye for his sons, as they were handsome and well-built young men, and entering together through one gate would draw attention and possibly harm. By advising them to disperse through different entrances, he sought to shield them from envy and ill-will that could befall them.
But then, Ya'qub — the Prophet who knew the reality of divine decree — immediately clarified the deeper truth: "And I cannot avail you against Allah in anything." He was teaching them a profound lesson: no precaution, no strategy, no human planning can change what Allah has written. Whether they entered together or separately, whatever Allah had decreed would come to pass. His advice was a means, not a guarantee; a precaution, not a protection against destiny.
He then anchored their hearts to the ultimate reality: "The decision is only for Allah." All matters — big and small, apparent and hidden — return to His will and wisdom. There is no true power, no real control, except His. And so he declared: "Upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let all the reliant ones rely."
This is the beautiful balance of Islam: we take the means, we act with wisdom, we plan carefully — but our hearts remain attached to Allah alone. We do not let our precautions make us forget the One who controls all outcomes. Ya'qub was not contradicting himself; rather, he was showing us the perfect synthesis of action and trust. He did what a wise father should do — he gave counsel — but he also redirected his sons' hearts to the only true source of safety and success.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless message for every believer. Life requires us to take precautions — to lock our doors, to plan our finances, to protect our families, to seek medical treatment, to be wise in our dealings. But all of these are merely means; they are not the true protectors. The One who protects, provides, and decides is Allah alone.
So, dear reader, let this verse transform your heart: do your part with excellence, but place your ultimate trust in Allah. When you face uncertainty, remember that the decree is His. When you plan for the future, remember that His plan is superior. And when you feel anxious about outcomes, remember the words of Ya'qub: "Upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let all the reliant ones rely."
This is the serenity of true faith — to act, and then to trust. To strive, and then to submit. To plan, and then to place everything in the hands of the Most Merciful. This is the path of the prophets, and it is open to you today. Walk it with confidence, for the One you rely upon never fails those who truly trust in Him.
