📖 English Meaning
And when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement."

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Bidā'atuhum (بِضَاعَتَهُمْ): The price they had paid for the grain, which was returned to them.
  • Namīru (نَمِيرُ): We will bring back provisions/supplies for our family.
  • Kayl ba'īr (كَيْلَ بَعِيرٍ): The measure/load of one camel — the portion allocated for one person.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the brothers opened their saddlebags and provisions upon returning home, they were astonished to find that the very price they had paid for the grain in Egypt had been secretly returned to them — placed back among their goods without their knowledge. This was a profound act of generosity and kindness from the Aziz of Egypt (Prophet Yusuf, peace be upon him), who had chosen to give them the grain freely while returning their payment as a gift.

Overwhelmed by this unexpected favour, the brothers turned to their father Ya'qub (peace be upon him) and said: "O our father, what more could we possibly desire or ask for? Here is our money returned to us in full! The ruler of Egypt has treated us with extraordinary honour and benevolence — he gave us full measure for our grain and then returned our payment as well. This is beyond anything we could have hoped for."

They then presented their father with a compelling set of arguments to allow Benjamin (Binyamin) to accompany them on their next journey:

  1. "We will bring provisions for our family" — With Benjamin accompanying us, we will be able to bring back a larger quantity of grain to sustain our household.
  2. "We will protect our brother" — We give you our solemn pledge that we will guard him carefully throughout the journey, both going and returning.
  3. "We will gain an additional camel-load" — Since the ruler gives each visitor a full camel-load of grain, Benjamin's presence will entitle us to one more measure — a significant addition to our provisions.

They concluded by saying: "That is an easy measure" — meaning that this additional quantity is something easily attainable from such a generous and noble ruler, and it would greatly benefit their family.

This verse beautifully illustrates how Allah, through His wisdom, was preparing the hearts of Ya'qub's family. The brothers, who had once treated Yusuf with jealousy and cruelty, were now experiencing the kindness of a ruler who was, unbeknownst to them, their own brother. This was part of Allah's divine plan to reunite the family and bring about the fulfilment of Yusuf's childhood dream.

A Lesson for the Believer:

This story teaches us profound lessons about trust in Allah's planning. The brothers had wronged Yusuf years earlier, yet here they were, unknowingly receiving his generosity and kindness. How often do we receive blessings from sources we do not recognise? How often does Allah soften hearts and open doors through means we least expect?

The brothers' words — "What more could we desire?" — reflect a beautiful attitude of gratitude and contentment. When we recognise Allah's favours upon us, even in small matters, our hearts fill with appreciation, and we become more willing to trust in His decree and take positive steps forward.

Notice also how the brothers framed their request to their father: they focused on practical benefits (more provisions), gave assurances of safety (we will protect him), and highlighted the ease of the matter. This is a beautiful example of how we should communicate with our parents — with respect, clear reasoning, and reassurance.

May Allah grant us the ability to recognise His blessings, to be grateful for His favours, and to trust in His divine plan even when we cannot see the full picture. Indeed, Allah's wisdom is greater than our understanding, and His mercy encompasses all things.

📜 Verse 63-67 — Yusuf

So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians."
He said, "Should I entrust you with him except [under coercion] as I entrusted you with his brother before? But Allah is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful."
And when they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, "O our father, what [more] could we desire? This is our merchandise returned to us. And we will obtain supplies for our family and protect our brother and obtain an increase of a camel's load; that is an easy measurement."
[Jacob] said, "Never will I send him with you until you give me a promise by Allah that you will bring him [back] to me, unless you should be surrounded by enemies." And when they had given their promise, he said, "Allah, over what we say, is Witness."
And he said, "O my sons, do not enter from one gate but enter from different gates; and I cannot avail you against [the decree of] Allah at all. The decision is only for Allah; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let those who would rely [indeed] rely."
