Tafsir (Explanation):
When the brothers of Yusuf (Joseph) found the royal cup in their youngest brother’s bag, they were seized with fear and regret. They had already lost one brother—Yusuf himself—years earlier, and now they faced losing another. Their father, Ya‘qub (Jacob), was an old man, frail and deeply attached to this youngest son, Benjamin. The thought of returning to their father without him was unbearable.
So, they turned to Yusuf—whom they did not yet recognize as their own brother—and pleaded with him, saying: “O mighty ruler! This boy has a father who is very old and weak, and he loves this son more than anything in this world. The separation would break his heart and hasten his end. So, take one of us instead of him as your slave or prisoner. We beg you, we see you as a man of kindness and excellence, and we trust that you will respond to our plea with mercy.”
Their words were a mixture of honesty and desperation. They acknowledged Yusuf’s reputation for generosity and fair treatment—how he had given them full measure, hosted them well, and treated them with dignity. Now, they appealed to that very goodness, hoping he would accept one of them as a ransom for their brother.
This verse beautifully illustrates the power of compassion and the human instinct to sacrifice for those we love. The brothers, who had once thrown Yusuf into a well out of jealousy, were now willing to give themselves up for the sake of their father’s happiness and their brother’s safety. It shows how hardship and time can soften hearts and bring people back to their better nature.
For us as believers, this story teaches us the immense value of kindness (ihsan) in our dealings with others. Yusuf’s character was so noble that even his enemies—those who had wronged him—recognized his excellence and appealed to it. When you are known for your goodness, people turn to you in their times of need. Let us strive to be people of ihsan, so that our kindness becomes a bridge that brings hearts together and opens doors of mercy, just as it did for Yusuf and his brothers.
