Surah Yusuf — Verse 79

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the brothers of Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, were confronted with the discovery of the king's cup in their youngest brother's baggage, they devised a plan. They knew that under Egyptian law, the punishment for theft was enslavement of the thief — and they did not want their brother Benjamin to be taken from them. So they said to Yusuf: "O minister, if you must take someone, take one of us in his place, for he has an elderly father who loves him dearly."

At this moment, Yusuf — the noble prophet — responded with words that shine with justice and piety. He said: "I seek refuge with Allah — far be it from us — that we should take anyone except him with whom we found our property. Indeed, we would then be wrongdoers."

In this brief but powerful reply, Yusuf established a principle of absolute justice that transcends time and place. He refused — with the utmost reverence and God-consciousness — to punish an innocent person for the crime of another. His words carry a profound lesson: true justice is not swayed by emotional appeals, family ties, or social pressure. The innocent must never bear the burden of the guilty.

Notice how Yusuf, peace be upon him, carefully chose his words. He did not say "the one who stole" — rather, he said "the one with whom we found our property." This precision reflects his truthfulness and his refusal to make an accusation beyond what he could verify. Yusuf could have easily accepted the brothers' offer — it would have resolved the situation with less conflict.
