- "أَسَرَّهَا" (he kept it secret): He concealed what he heard and did not reveal it openly.
- "شَرٌّ مَّكَانًا" (worse in position): Lower in rank, more evil in standing, or more blameworthy in conduct.
- "تَصِفُونَ" (you describe): What you attribute, claim, or fabricate.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the cup was found in Benjamin’s bag, his brothers—out of spite and envy—remarked: "If he steals, then no wonder, for a full brother of his (meaning Prophet Yusuf, peace be upon him) stole before him." They sought to tarnish Yusuf’s reputation and justify their own malice by linking the alleged theft to their brother’s past.
Yusuf, upon hearing this accusation, felt deep hurt, yet he concealed his reaction and did not let his feelings show to them. He kept his response within himself, not uttering it aloud to avoid escalating the situation or exposing his identity prematurely. In his heart, he said: "You are worse in standing and more evil in what you have done—for you plotted against your own brother, threw him into the well, sold him into slavery, and now you falsely accuse him. Allah knows best the truth of what you claim and the lies you fabricate."
This moment reflects Yusuf’s extraordinary patience, self-restraint, and reliance on Allah. Despite the injustice and slander, he chose silence over confrontation, trusting that Allah would expose the truth in His own time. His inner reply was not a defense of himself but a quiet acknowledgment of their greater sin, leaving judgment to Allah, who is fully aware of all that they uttered.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson in character: when falsely accused or hurt by others, the believer does not need to retaliate with harsh words or expose his grievances. Yusuf, peace be upon him, modeled the highest degree of emotional control and reliance on Allah. He knew that Allah’s knowledge surpasses all human claims, and that ultimate justice rests with Him alone. In our own lives, when we face slander or betrayal, we can find strength in this example—choosing dignity over revenge, and placing our trust in Allah, who hears every word and sees every deed. This is the beauty of Islam: it elevates the soul to a level where even in the face of injustice, we respond with wisdom, patience, and an unshakable faith that Allah’s justice will prevail.
