Surah Yusuf — Verse 87

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Prophet Ya‘qūb (Jacob, peace be upon him) addresses his sons with fatherly compassion and unwavering faith. Despite the long years of separation and grief over the loss of his beloved son Yūsuf (Joseph) and his youngest son, he does not surrender to despair. Instead, he commands them: "O my sons, go and inquire about Yūsuf and his brother, and do not lose hope in the mercy of Allah."

He urges them to return to Egypt and diligently search for news of their two brothers. The word *tahassasū* implies a careful, persistent effort to uncover the truth—using every means available to find them. This teaches us that while we must place our trust in Allah, we are also obligated to take practical steps and strive with our own hands and senses.

Then comes the profound spiritual counsel: "And do not despair of the relief of Allah." Ya‘qūb reminds his children—and all of humanity—that Allah’s mercy is vast and His power knows no bounds. The "relief of Allah" (*rawh Allah*) is that divine breath of hope that revives the heart, just as rain revives barren land. No matter how dark the night of trials may seem, the dawn of His mercy is always near for those who call upon Him with sincerity.

He concludes with a powerful truth: "Indeed, no one despairs of the relief of Allah except the disbelieving people." This is a gentle yet firm warning. Despair is not merely a negative emotion; it is a sign of weak faith, because it implies a doubt in Allah’s ability to change circumstances. The disbelievers—those who do not truly know their Lord—are the ones who lose hope, for they are ignorant of His infinite power and His hidden kindness toward His servants.

Open your heart to His mercy, take practical steps toward your goals, and wait for His relief with patience and certainty.

The Qur’an teaches us that after every difficulty comes ease. So, hold firm to hope, for hope in Allah is not a luxury—it is an act of worship and a sign of true faith. And remember: the one who created the heavens and the earth, who split the sea for Mūsā and reunited Ya‘qūb with Yūsuf, is fully capable of turning your sorrow into joy and your night into day. Never despair, for His mercy encompasses all things.
