Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Baththi (بَثِّي): The most intense form of grief—a sorrow so overwhelming that one can no longer bear it in silence and must pour it out.
- Huzni (حُزْنِي): Deep sadness and distress.
- Ashku (أَشْكُو): I complain or express my suffering.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When Ya‘qoob’s sons came to him with the shirt stained with false blood, claiming that a wolf had devoured Yusuf, they expected their father to break down in despair or lash out in anger. Instead, the noble prophet responded with words that reveal the depth of his faith and trust in Allah. He said: *"I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah alone."*
This statement carries a profound lesson. Ya‘qoob did not deny his pain—he was a human being, and the loss of his beloved son weighed heavily on his heart. But he refused to direct his complaint to anyone other than Allah. He did not lament to people, nor did he seek solace in empty words or worldly distractions. Instead, he turned exclusively to his Lord, the One who hears every whisper of the heart and knows every hidden tear.
Then he added: *"And I know from Allah that which you do not know."* This is the hallmark of true certainty (yaqeen). Despite the apparent tragedy, Ya‘qoob held firmly to the knowledge that Allah’s plan is greater than what meets the eye. He remembered the true dream of Yusuf—the eleven stars, the sun, and the moon prostrating to him—and he knew with absolute conviction that this vision was a promise from Allah that would surely come to pass. He knew that Allah’s mercy, His wisdom, and His ability to turn trials into triumphs far surpass human understanding.
Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful example of patience and trust. When trials befall you, do not scatter your complaints among people who can neither harm nor benefit you. Turn to Allah—the One who removes distress, answers the call of the distressed, and rewards those who endure with patience. He knows what you do not know. He sees the light at the end of the tunnel even when your eyes are clouded by tears. So, like Ya‘qoob, hold on to hope in Allah’s mercy, for His relief is near, and His promise is true. Let your heart find peace in knowing that every hardship is accompanied by ease, and that the One who tests you is the One who will never abandon you.
