The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] from what they earned a [single] thing. That is what is extreme error.

Word Meanings:

  • Ramad (رَمَادٍ): Ashes — the residue left after something has been completely burned.
  • I'shtaddat (اشْتَدَّتْ): Became intense and powerful.
  • 'Asif (عَاصِفٍ): A day of violent, raging winds that uproots and scatters everything in its path.
  • Dhalal Ba'id (الضَّلَالُ الْبَعِيدُ): Utter, far-reaching misguidance — a deviation from truth so profound that its end cannot be perceived.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah — the Most Merciful, the All-Wise — presents a striking and profound parable to illustrate the reality of the deeds performed by those who reject faith in their Lord. He compares their good actions — such as charity, kindness to relatives, and helping the distressed — to ashes scattered by a violent wind on a fiercely stormy day. Just as the raging wind seizes the ashes and disperses them in every direction until not a trace remains, so too are the deeds of the disbelievers rendered utterly void and worthless. Because these actions were not built upon the foundation of faith in Allah and sincerity to Him alone, they carry no weight on the Day of Judgment. On that Day, the disbelievers will find that they cannot benefit from anything they earned in this world — no reward, no merit, no intercession — for their disbelief has destroyed the value of their works, just as the wind obliterates the ashes completely.

This is the ultimate loss: striving and toiling without a sound foundation, then finding nothing but emptiness. This is the far-reaching misguidance — a deviation from the straight path whose end cannot even be glimpsed, let alone escaped.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate this powerful image: a person spends their entire life doing good — feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, helping the needy — yet on the Day when deeds are weighed, they find nothing in their scale. What a devastating realization! This is why Islam teaches us that the acceptance of deeds depends not only on their outward form but on the heart's intention and the soul's connection to its Creator. When you build your life upon the rock of faith, your good deeds become like a firmly rooted tree, bearing fruit in this world and the next. But without that foundation, even the most impressive achievements crumble to dust.

The door of faith is open to every soul until the final breath. Do not let your efforts be wasted — turn to your Lord with sincerity, and He will transform your deeds into treasures that await you on a day when nothing else will avail. The One who created you loves for you to succeed, and He has shown you the way. Will you not take it?

📜 Verse 16-20 — Ibrahim

Before him is Hell, and he will be given a drink of purulent water.
He will gulp it but will hardly [be able to] swallow it. And death will come to him from everywhere, but he is not to die. And before him is a massive punishment.
The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] from what they earned a [single] thing. That is what is extreme error.
Have you not seen that Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can do away with you and produce a new creation.
And that is not difficult for Allah.
