Key Words and Their Meanings:
- فَرَقْنَاهُ (farraqnāhu): We made it distinct and clear, separating truth from falsehood; also read as "faraqnāhu" meaning We revealed it in parts.
- عَلَىٰ مُكْثٍ (ʿalā mukthin): With deliberation, patience, and gradual pacing — without haste.
- تَنزِيلًا (tanzīlan): A gradual, stage-by-stage sending down, suited to circumstances.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a profound divine gift: "And [it is] a Qur'an which We have separated [by revelation] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period, and We have sent it down progressively."
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, reveals that this Qur'an was not sent all at once, but was carefully distinguished and clarified — making it a decisive criterion between guidance and misguidance, between truth and falsehood. The purpose of this gradual revelation is stated clearly: so that the Prophet could recite it to humanity with calmness, deliberation, and reflection. This measured pace was not a limitation but a mercy — it allowed the listeners to absorb, understand, and internalize every verse deeply.
Moreover, the Qur'an was revealed piece by piece, over twenty-three years, in response to real events, questions, and evolving needs of the early Muslim community. Each revelation came at the perfect moment, addressing a specific situation with divine precision. This gradual approach strengthened the faith of the believers, built their character step by step, and made the message easier to memorize, practice, and live by.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, ponder this beautiful wisdom: the Qur'an was sent gradually so that hearts could receive it fully. Today, we can apply this same principle in our own lives — by reading the Qur'an slowly, reflecting on its meanings, and implementing it step by step. Do not rush through its verses as if in a race; instead, let each verse settle in your heart, transform your actions, and draw you closer to your Creator. The Qur'an is a living guide, revealed with love and care for humanity. Embrace it with the same deliberation with which it was sent down, and you will find in it a light that illuminates every corner of your life — a light that never fades, and a mercy that never ends.
