Translation — Tafsir
Meanings of Key Words:
- "Al-Adhqan" (الأذقان): The plural of "dhaqan," which refers to the chin or the lower part of the face. Falling "on the chins" means falling on the face, prostrating completely.
- "Yakhirrun" (يخرّون): They fall down or collapse, indicating a sudden and humble submission.
- "Sujjadan" (سُجَّدًا): Prostrating in worship and humility before Allah.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to those who reject the truth: "Believe in this Quran or do not believe—it is all the same to the Quran itself. Your faith adds nothing to its perfection, and your disbelief diminishes nothing from its glory. It remains the eternal word of Allah, exalted and unchangeable." This is a stern warning and a rebuke to the disbelievers, showing them that their rejection is of no consequence to the truth; rather, it only harms themselves.
Then Allah draws attention to a profound reality: those who were given true knowledge before the Quran—the sincere scholars and believers from the People of the Book who studied the earlier scriptures and recognized the signs of prophethood and the nature of divine revelation—when the Quran is recited to them, they fall down on their faces in prostration. They do so out of deep reverence, gratitude, and submission to Allah, because they recognize that this Quran is the very truth they had been awaiting. Their hearts, purified by knowledge and faith, immediately respond with humility and worship, even before hearing the full message.
This verse teaches us that true knowledge leads to humility, not arrogance. The more a person understands the reality of Allah’s revelation, the more they submit to it with love and awe. The scholars of the previous scriptures, despite having their own books, recognized the Quran as the final confirmation of the truth, and their response was immediate prostration—a sign of their sincere hearts and their connection to Allah.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful scene: the people of knowledge, when they hear the Quran, do not argue or turn away—they fall in prostration. This is the mark of a living heart. The Quran is not merely a book to be read; it is a divine call that touches the soul and transforms the believer. If you find your heart unmoved by the Quran, ask Allah to soften it, and approach His words with sincerity and humility. The same Quran that made the scholars of old fall in prostration is available to you today—open your heart to it, and you will find peace, guidance, and a light that illuminates your path to Allah. Let your faith be like theirs: a faith that is not shaken by the opinions of others, but firmly rooted in the certainty that this is the word of your Lord. Prostrate to Allah, thank Him for the gift of Islam, and let the Quran be your guide to eternal success.
