Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- اسْجُدُوا (prostrate): Here it means a prostration of honor and respect, not worship, as commanded by Allah to the angels.
- إِبْلِيسَ (Iblis): The devil, who was among the angels in form and station but was of the jinn, and thus disobeyed.
- طِينًا (tin): Clay or mud, the substance from which Adam was created.
Tafsir (Explanation):
And remember, O Prophet, when your Lord said to the angels: "Prostrate before Adam as a sign of honor and reverence." So all the angels complied and prostrated, except Iblis. He refused out of arrogance and pride, saying in denial and haughtiness: "Shall I prostrate to one whom You created from clay?" He saw himself as superior, arguing that he was created from fire while Adam was created from humble clay. This was the first act of arrogance and disobedience against the command of Allah, and it revealed the deep-seated envy and pride within Iblis. He rejected the divine wisdom of Allah, who honored Adam with knowledge and elevated him above many of His creations. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the sin of pride and the danger of measuring one's worth against others based on worldly or elemental origins, rather than submitting to the will of Allah.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It teaches us that true honor lies not in our origins, status, or material qualities, but in our obedience and submission to Allah. Iblis lost his rank and was cursed forever because of a single act of arrogance. How easy it is for us to fall into the same trap when we look down upon others, thinking ourselves better because of wealth, lineage, or intellect! Let this be a warning: humility is the key to Paradise, and pride is the key to destruction. Embrace the beautiful example of the angels, who obeyed without question, and strive to be among those who submit wholeheartedly to Allah's commands. For in that submission lies true dignity, peace, and eternal success.
