Key Words and Their Meanings:
- ثَبَّتْنَاكَ (thabbatnāka): We strengthened you, made you firm, and established you upon the truth.
- تَرْكَنُ (tarka-nu): To incline, lean toward, or feel at ease with something or someone.
- شَيْئًا قَلِيلًا (shay'an qalīlā): A very small amount, the slightest degree.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) directly, revealing a profound aspect of Allah's care and protection for His Messenger. The verse says: "And had We not strengthened you, you would have almost inclined to them a little."
The context here is the intense pressure the disbelievers of Makkah placed upon the Prophet (peace be upon him). They tried every possible means to make him compromise his message—offering him wealth, power, and status, and even suggesting he soften his stance toward their idols or delay his condemnation of them. They were relentless in their attempts to sway him.
Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, reminds the Prophet that it was only through His divine strengthening and protection that he remained steadfast. The verse acknowledges that, given the Prophet's deep compassion and his burning desire for his people to embrace guidance, and given the force of their persistent deception and maneuvering, there was a theoretical possibility—had Allah not protected him—that he might have inclined toward them in the slightest degree. But Allah immediately clarifies that He did strengthen him, and thus the Prophet never actually inclined toward them in any way whatsoever.
This verse serves as a powerful testament to the doctrine of *'ismah* (divine protection of the Prophets). It confirms that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was completely safeguarded from falling into any error or compromise in conveying the divine message. The conditional phrasing "you would have almost" is a rhetorical device that emphasizes the severity of the situation while simultaneously affirming the absolute protection Allah granted His Messenger.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a beautiful and reassuring lesson for every believer. It shows us that Allah does not leave His sincere servants to face trials alone. Just as He strengthened His beloved Prophet during the most difficult moments, He is capable of strengthening us when we face pressures to compromise our faith—whether from society, family, or worldly temptations.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was human, and the verse acknowledges the weight of what he faced. Yet, Allah's support was greater. This teaches us that no matter how overwhelming the pressure to deviate may seem, Allah's protection is always available to those who sincerely seek it and remain committed to His path.
When you feel the world pulling you away from your principles, remember that the same Allah who steadied His Prophet's heart is ready to steady yours. Turn to Him in supplication, increase your connection with the Qur'an, and surround yourself with righteous company. Allah promises in another verse: "Indeed, those who say, 'Our Lord is Allah' and then remain steadfast—the angels descend upon them, [saying], 'Fear not, nor grieve, and receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.'" (Fussilat 41:30)
The verse also highlights the Prophet's extraordinary character—his deep love for his people and his earnest desire for their salvation. This is a model for us all: to care for others with compassion, while never compromising the truth. Islam calls us to be firm in our principles yet gentle in our approach, exactly as the Prophet exemplified throughout his life.
Let this verse inspire you to trust in Allah's protection, to remain unwavering in your faith, and to know that the One who guided you will never abandon you when you sincerely strive for His sake.
