Surah Al-Kahf — Verse 38

• لَّٰكِنَّا (Lākinnā): A contraction of "lākin anā," meaning "But I" — used here to express a firm contrast and personal conviction.
• هُوَ اللَّهُ (Huwa Allāh): "He is Allah" — emphasizing the exclusive and absolute identity of the Creator.

The Interpretation of the Verse:

This verse is part of the beautiful dialogue between two men mentioned in Sūrat Al-Kahf — one wealthy and arrogant, the other poor but wise and righteous. When the wealthy man boasted of his wealth, children, and status, and even dared to deny the Day of Judgment, claiming that his gardens would last forever, the believing man responded with wisdom and faith.

Here, the believer firmly distances himself from the arrogant statement of his companion. He says: "But I do not follow your words that lead to disbelief. Rather, I affirm with certainty that Allah — and He alone — is my Lord, the One who created me, provided for me, and showered me with countless blessings. He is the sole object of my worship, my hope, and my trust. I associate no partner with Him in any act of worship, whether in my heart, my tongue, or my deeds."

This statement is not merely a rejection of the companion's disbelief — it is a profound declaration of faith (Shahādah) that carries immense weight. The believer acknowledges Allah's exclusive right to divinity and lordship, and he makes a personal commitment to pure monotheism, free from any trace of Shirk.

A Da'wah Reflection for the Reader:

Dear reader, ponder deeply on this verse. The righteous man did not argue with arrogance or insult his companion. Instead, he presented the truth with clarity and sincerity, combining firmness in faith with gentleness in manner. He did not let the wealth and status of his companion intimidate him, nor did he compromise his beliefs for the sake of social harmony.

This is the essence of Islamic character: to stand firm upon the truth, to declare Allah's oneness with confidence, and to invite others to righteousness through wisdom and beautiful exhortation. When you say "Lā ilāha illa Allāh" (There is no god but Allah), let it be a living reality that shapes your thoughts, your actions, and your entire life. Let your heart be filled with love for Allah, your tongue with His remembrance, and your limbs with obedience to His commands.

Remember that true success is not measured by wealth, children, or worldly possessions — but by your relationship with your Lord. The believer in this story, despite his apparent poverty, possessed the greatest treasure: certainty in Allah and freedom from the chains of Shirk. And indeed, Allah honored him with Paradise, while the arrogant companion lost everything.

So, my dear brother and sister in humanity, make this declaration your own: "But I say: He is Allah, my Lord, and I do not associate anyone with my Lord." Let it be your shield against doubt, your light in darkness, and your key to eternal happiness. For whoever clings to this pure faith and acts upon it will find, on the Day when wealth and children avail nothing, that only a sound heart brought to Allah will be saved.
