Word Meanings:

  • Majma' baynihima: The meeting point of the two seas, the place where the two waters converged.
  • Nasiya: They forgot — both Moses and his young companion forgot about their fish.
  • Sarab: A tunnel, passage, or path — a hollow way through which something slips away, like an underground channel.

Explanation of the Verse:

When Moses and his young companion reached the junction where the two seas met, they had already endured a long and tiring journey. They sat down near a rock to rest, and at that very spot — the place where Moses had been promised he would meet the righteous servant of Allah (Al-Khidr) — they forgot about the fish they had brought along as their provision. The fish had been carried by the young man, Joshua (Yusha'), in a basket. By the will and power of Allah, the dead fish was brought back to life, and it slipped out of the basket and made its way into the sea, carving a dry, tunnel-like path through the water — a miraculous sign that did not close up behind it. The water parted and remained parted, leaving a clear passage as a mark of Allah's power and a sign for Moses to recognize the place he was seeking.

This moment was not a mere accident of forgetfulness; it was divinely ordained. The forgetting of the fish was part of Allah's plan to guide Moses to the meeting with Al-Khidr. When the fish moved and left that extraordinary path in the sea, it became a miracle and a clear indicator that they had reached their destination. The forgetfulness of Moses and his companion was itself a lesson: that Allah's wisdom often works through events that seem like oversights or losses, but in reality, they are doors to greater knowledge and blessings.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on this scene: a great prophet of Allah, on a sacred quest for knowledge, is guided by the most unexpected sign — a fish coming back to life and leaving a trail in the sea. This teaches us that Allah's guidance comes in ways we do not anticipate. When you sincerely seek truth, knowledge, and closeness to Allah, He will place signs on your path, even in the smallest and most ordinary things of life. Never underestimate the power of Allah to turn a moment of forgetfulness into a milestone of your journey. Trust in Allah's plan, stay patient, and keep walking the path of seeking beneficial knowledge — for the One who guided Moses through a fish will surely guide you through His mercy and wisdom.

📜 Verse 59-63 — Al-Kahf

And those cities - We destroyed them when they wronged, and We made for their destruction an appointed time.
And [mention] when Moses said to his servant, "I will not cease [traveling] until I reach the junction of the two seas or continue for a long period."
But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its course into the sea, slipping away.
So when they had passed beyond it, [Moses] said to his boy, "Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue."
He said, "Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot [there] the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan - that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly".
