Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fatāh (فتاه): His young servant or attendant, specifically Yusha' ibn Nun (Joshua), who accompanied him and served him.
  • Lā Abraḥ (لا أبرح): I will not cease or stop; I will continue without pause.
  • Majma' al-Bahrayn (مجمع البحرين): The meeting point or confluence of the two seas — the place where the fresh and salt waters meet.
  • Ḥuqub (حقبًا): A long, indefinite period of time; an extended age or era.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this noble verse, Allah recounts a remarkable moment from the life of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) — a moment that teaches us the boundless value of sacred knowledge and the humility required to seek it. Musa, despite being a mighty prophet of Allah, one who spoke directly to his Lord, did not consider himself too great to travel far and wide in pursuit of wisdom. He said to his young servant, Yusha' ibn Nun: "I will not give up or stop my journey until I reach the meeting point of the two seas, or I will continue traveling for a very long time."

This statement reveals Musa's unwavering determination and sincere intention. He was willing to endure hardship, fatigue, and an unspecified length of time — even a period that could stretch into ages — all for the sake of learning from a righteous servant of Allah whom he had been told about. The "two seas" refer to the junction where the sweet and salty waters meet, a location that became the signpost for his quest.

The verse also highlights the beautiful relationship between a teacher and a devoted student. Musa did not travel alone; he took his young companion with him, showing that seeking knowledge is often a shared journey, and that the young can accompany and learn from the wise. His words "I will not cease" are a powerful lesson in perseverance — true seekers of knowledge never give up, even when the path is long and the destination unclear.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound message for every Muslim: knowledge is a treasure that requires sacrifice. If a prophet of Musa's stature was willing to travel for an unknown duration to gain more understanding, how much more should we, as ordinary believers, strive to learn our religion, deepen our faith, and seek beneficial knowledge? The journey of seeking knowledge is never wasted — every step taken in its pursuit is beloved to Allah. Let this inspire you to never stop learning, to remain humble before those who know more, and to trust that Allah will guide your steps, just as He guided Musa to the meeting of the two seas. Your effort in seeking knowledge — whether religious or worldly — is an act of worship when done with a sincere intention to benefit yourself and others. So, be like Musa: determined, patient, and unwavering in your quest for truth.

📜 Verse 58-62 — Al-Kahf

And your Lord is the Forgiving, full of mercy. If He were to impose blame upon them for what they earned, He would have hastened for them the punishment. Rather, for them is an appointment from which they will never find an escape.
And those cities - We destroyed them when they wronged, and We made for their destruction an appointed time.
And [mention] when Moses said to his servant, "I will not cease [traveling] until I reach the junction of the two seas or continue for a long period."
But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its course into the sea, slipping away.
So when they had passed beyond it, [Moses] said to his boy, "Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered in this, our journey, [much] fatigue."
