Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Kharraqaha" (خَرَقَهَا): He made a hole in it, specifically by pulling out one of its planks.
  • "Imran" (إِمْرًا): An extremely grave, severe, and monstrous matter — something utterly reprehensible and astonishing in its evil.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After the agreement between Musa (peace be upon him) and Al-Khidr that Musa would not question any action until Al-Khidr himself explained it, the two set off walking along the seashore. Eventually, a ship passed by, and they asked its crew to carry them aboard. The sailors recognized Al-Khidr and, as a mark of honor and respect, agreed to carry them without any charge or payment.

Once they were safely aboard and sailing through the sea, Al-Khidr deliberately took an axe or similar tool and pulled out one of the ship's planks, making a hole in its hull. Water began to seep into the vessel. Shocked and deeply concerned, Musa could not contain himself — this was a matter of life and death for innocent people who had shown them nothing but kindness. He turned to Al-Khidr and protested: "Have you made a hole in this ship to drown its passengers?! You have brought upon us a truly monstrous and dreadful deed!"

Musa's reaction was entirely natural and understandable from a human perspective. Here was a ship whose owners had generously carried them without asking for anything in return, and now their very lives were in peril. The action seemed not merely wrong, but catastrophic — an act of sheer destruction and ingratitude. Yet, as we will learn in the following verses, Al-Khidr was acting under divine instruction, and what appeared to be pure harm was, in reality, a mercy in disguise.

A Call to Reflection:

This profound story teaches us a vital lesson about trust in Allah's wisdom. How often do we see events in our own lives that appear disastrous, unfair, or utterly senseless — only to later discover that Allah was protecting us from something far worse, or preparing a greater good for us? The believer's heart must remain anchored in the certainty that Allah's knowledge encompasses all things, while our own understanding is limited and flawed. What we perceive as a calamity may be a hidden blessing; what we judge as harm may be divine protection. This is the essence of *tawakkul* — placing our complete trust in the One who knows what we do not know. Let this story inspire you to face life's trials with patience and certainty, knowing that the hand of Allah moves behind every event, weaving a tapestry of mercy that our limited minds cannot yet perceive.
