Word Meanings:

  • اتَّبَعْتَنِي (at-taba'tanī): If you follow me, accompany me, or walk in my footsteps as a student follows a teacher.
  • فَلَا تَسْأَلْنِي (fa lā tas'alnī): Do not ask me or question me about anything you observe.
  • أُحْدِثَ لَكَ مِنْهُ ذِكْرًا (uḥditha laka minhu dhikrā): Until I myself initiate the explanation and mention its matter to you, clarifying its hidden wisdom.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this blessed verse, we see the wise teacher Al-Khidr setting a clear condition for his student, Prophet Musa (peace be upon him), before they embark on their journey together. Al-Khidr said: "If you truly wish to follow me and learn from me, then you must not ask me about anything you see me do—no matter how strange or puzzling it may appear—until I myself bring up the matter and explain it to you."

This was not a harsh restriction, but rather a necessary teaching method. Al-Khidr knew that the actions he was about to perform would appear outwardly wrong or harmful—like damaging a boat, killing a boy, or repairing a wall in a town that refused them hospitality. Had Musa asked immediately, the wisdom behind each act would have been revealed prematurely, and the profound lesson of patience and trust in divine knowledge would have been lost. So Al-Khidr set this condition to protect the learning process and to train Musa in patience, forbearance, and submission to a higher wisdom.

This verse teaches us a beautiful and timeless lesson: sometimes in life, we encounter situations that we do not understand, actions that seem unjust or confusing, and events that test our patience. The believer is called upon to exercise restraint, to hold back hasty questions and judgments, and to trust that Allah's wisdom—and the wisdom of those He has granted knowledge—will eventually be made clear. It is a call to humility, reminding us that our limited understanding cannot always grasp the full picture at first glance.

Moreover, this verse beautifully illustrates the proper etiquette of seeking knowledge. A sincere student must be patient, attentive, and willing to wait for the right moment for clarification. It also shows the greatness of Prophet Musa, who, despite being a mighty messenger of Allah, humbled himself to learn from another righteous servant, accepting these conditions with grace and submission.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on your own journey of faith. How often do we question Allah's decree when things do not go as we expect? How often do we demand immediate answers to life's trials? This verse invites us to cultivate patience and trust, to believe that behind every difficulty lies hidden wisdom, and that Allah, the All-Knowing, will reveal the reasons in His perfect time—whether in this world or the next. Let us embrace this beautiful teaching and strive to be among those who say, as Musa did, "You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in any command."

And how can you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?"
69قَالَ سَتَجِدُنِي إِن شَاءَ اللَّهُ صَابِرًا وَلَا أَعْصِي لَكَ أَمْرًا
[Moses] said, "You will find me, if Allah wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in [any] order."
70قَالَ فَإِنِ اتَّبَعْتَنِي فَلَا تَسْأَلْنِي عَن شَيْءٍ حَتَّىٰ أُحْدِثَ لَكَ مِنْهُ ذِكْرًا

So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, al-Khidh r tore it open. [Moses] said, "Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing."
