Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Makhad (الْمَخَاضُ): The pangs of childbirth — the intense labor pains and contractions that signal the baby’s imminent arrival.
- Jidh’ (جِذْعِ): The trunk or stem of a tree.
- Nasiyyan (نَسْيًا): Something discarded, forgotten, and of no account — a thing utterly insignificant and overlooked.
- Mansiyyan (مَنسِيًّا): Completely forgotten, with no trace or memory remaining.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the time of delivery came, the labor pains grew severe and drove Maryam (peace be upon her) to seek refuge by the trunk of a palm tree. She leaned against it, finding a place to support herself in her hour of distress — for she was alone, with no midwife to assist her and no one to comfort her. In that moment of overwhelming physical pain and emotional anguish, overwhelmed by the weight of what was happening, she uttered a heartfelt wish: *"Oh, would that I had died before this, and had been something utterly forgotten and discarded!"*
This was not a rejection of Allah’s decree, nor a complaint against His will — rather, it was the natural cry of a pure and chaste soul facing an unimaginable trial. She knew that people would not understand her situation, that tongues would wag with suspicion, and that her honor — which she had guarded so diligently — would be questioned. She wished she had passed away before this moment, or that she had been a mere forgotten object, so that no one would ever think ill of her or cast doubt upon her virtue.
Yet, in her deepest heart, Maryam never despaired of Allah’s mercy. This moment of weakness was followed immediately by divine comfort and provision, as we shall see in the coming verses. Her story teaches us that even the most righteous servants of Allah experience moments of human fragility — and that Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, never abandons those who place their trust in Him.
A Lesson for the Heart:
Dear believer, reflect on the state of Maryam — a woman of unparalleled piety and purity, chosen by Allah above all women of the worlds. Even she felt the weight of hardship and uttered words of longing for relief. This is a profound reminder that trials are not a sign of Allah’s displeasure, but rather a test that refines the soul and raises its rank. When you face difficulties that seem unbearable, remember that Maryam’s trial was followed by Allah’s immediate care — He provided for her in the most miraculous way, beneath that very palm tree.
Never let despair creep into your heart, for Allah’s mercy is nearer to you than your own jugular vein. The very moment you feel most alone and most overwhelmed, know that Allah sees you, hears you, and is preparing a way out — just as He did for Maryam. Turn to Him in your distress, and He will turn your hardship into ease, your sorrow into joy, and your tears into a testimony of His boundless love and power.
