Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Sariyyan (سَرِيًّا): A small stream or brook of flowing water.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Maryam (peace be upon her) was in the depths of her labor pains, alone beneath the palm tree, and overcome with anguish and sorrow, a voice called out to her from beneath her—and this was the voice of her newborn son, 'Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him), whom Allah had made to speak from the cradle as a miracle. The voice said: "Do not grieve, O Maryam. Your Lord has placed beneath you a small stream of fresh, flowing water from which you may drink and quench your thirst."

This was a divine reassurance and a tangible sign of Allah's mercy and care. At the very moment of her greatest distress, Allah provided her with immediate relief—water beneath her feet and, as the following verses show, ripe dates from the palm tree above her. This teaches us a profound lesson: when Allah tests His servants, He never leaves them without a way out. The relief often comes from where we least expect it, just as the stream appeared beneath her when she was in the middle of the desert.

Notice the tenderness in the divine address: "Do not grieve." Allah did not rebuke her for her fear or sadness, but instead comforted her and reminded her of His provision. This is the nature of Allah—He is Al-Latif (The Most Kind) and Ar-Rahman (The Most Merciful). He knows our weaknesses and our struggles, and He responds with gentleness and care.

For us as believers, this verse is a beacon of hope. No matter how dark or difficult our circumstances may seem, Allah is always near. He has already prepared the means of our relief, even if we cannot see it yet. So when trials come your way, hold on to patience and trust in Allah, for just as He provided for Maryam in her moment of utter vulnerability, He will provide for you. Turn to Him in supplication, and let your heart find peace in His promise: "Indeed, with hardship comes ease" (Ash-Sharh 94:6).

📜 Verse 22-26 — Maryam

So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place.
And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten."
But he called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.
And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.
So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.' "
