Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- السُّفَهَاء (Al-Sufahā'): The foolish, the ignorant, those lacking sound intellect and judgment.
- آمِنُوا (Āminū): Believe with sincere faith of the heart, tongue, and limbs.
- أَلَا (Alā): Indeed, truly — a particle of emphasis drawing attention to an important truth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the hypocrites are told, "Believe as the people have believed" — meaning the sincere companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the righteous believers from among the People of the Book like Abdullah ibn Salam — they respond with arrogance and mockery, saying: "Shall we believe as the foolish have believed?" They consider the believers to be people of weak intellect and poor judgment, and they pride themselves on their supposed wisdom and superiority.
But Allah, the Most High, refutes their claim decisively: "Indeed, it is they who are the foolish, but they do not know." The irony is profound — those who mock the believers for their faith are themselves the true fools, for they have rejected the guidance that leads to salvation in this life and the next. They are blind to their own loss, unaware that their mockery only deepens their ruin.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation: true wisdom lies not in rejecting the truth but in embracing it with a humble heart. The believers whom the hypocrites ridiculed were the very people whom Allah honored with His guidance and success. The mockers, on the other hand, were left in darkness, deceived by their own arrogance.
Dear reader, let this be a mirror for your soul. Do not be among those who look down upon the people of faith, thinking themselves more intelligent or more sophisticated. For the greatest intelligence is that which recognizes the truth and submits to its Creator. The companions of the Prophet — may Allah be pleased with them all — were not fools; they were the wisest of people, for they invested their lives in what truly matters: the pleasure of Allah and the eternal bliss of Paradise.
And know that the hypocrites' condition is the most dangerous of all, for they live in self-deception. They think they are wise, but they are the fools. They think they are safe, but they are the losers. May Allah protect us all from the disease of hypocrisy and grant us sincere faith, for He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
