- شَيَاطِينِهِمْ (shayāṭīnihim): Their devils — meaning their leaders, chiefs, and ringleaders of disbelief and hypocrisy who incite them to evil.
- مُسْتَهْزِئُونَ (mustahzi’ūn): Mockers, those who ridicule and make fun of others.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse unveils the double-faced nature of the hypocrites — a trait that is as old as faith itself. When the hypocrites meet the believers, they put on a mask of faith and say, "We believe," just as you believe. They utter these words with their tongues, not their hearts, hoping to be accepted among the believers and to gain their trust and protection.
But the moment they are alone with their evil leaders — the "devils" among the disbelievers and the architects of hypocrisy — they quickly drop the mask. They reassure their masters, saying, "We are truly with you; we are on your side and follow your path. We were only mocking those believers when we claimed to believe." They openly admit that their display of faith was nothing but a game, a jest, and a tool of deception to mock the believers and their religion.
This verse exposes the reality of hypocrisy: it is a disease of the heart that manifests in duplicity, deception, and mockery of the truth. The hypocrites live in a state of constant inner conflict — they are neither with the believers nor truly with the disbelievers. They think they are cleverly playing both sides, but in reality, they are only deceiving themselves.
A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound lesson for every soul. It teaches us that faith is not a word to be uttered but a reality to be lived. The hypocrites thought they could fool Allah and His believers, but Allah — who knows the secrets of every heart — exposed their schemes in the Qur'an for all time.
Sincerity (ikhlas) is the essence of faith. When you say "I believe," let your heart confirm what your tongue declares. Do not be like those who wear a mask of faith in public but live in darkness when alone. Allah sees you always, and He knows what is hidden in your chest.
This verse also comforts the believers: do not be distressed by those who mock your faith. Their mockery is a sign of their own weakness and loss. You are upon the truth, and the truth will always prevail, no matter how many jesters laugh at it.
And let this be a warning to every soul: beware of surrounding yourself with "devils" — bad companions and corrupt leaders who pull you away from the path of Allah. Your true friends are those who remind you of Allah and bring you closer to Him, not those who lead you to mock the truth and laugh at the believers.
May Allah make us among the sincere believers whose hearts are pure, whose tongues are truthful, and whose deeds are aligned with their words. Ameen.
