Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(Ala): A particle of alert and attention, used to draw the listener's focus to an important truth.
(Al-Mufsidun): Those who cause corruption and disorder, spreading mischief in the earth.
(La Yash'urun): They do not perceive or realize; they are unaware of the true nature of their actions.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse comes as a decisive response to those hypocrites who, when told not to spread corruption on earth, claimed: "We are only reformers." Allah exposes their falsehood with a powerful declaration: "Indeed, it is they who are the corrupters, but they do not perceive it."

The verse begins with "Ala" — a call to attention, as if Allah is saying: "Listen carefully, O people! Open your eyes to the reality of these claimants." Then comes the emphatic assertion using both "Inna" (indeed) and "Hum" (they themselves) — a double emphasis that leaves no room for doubt. They are not merely corrupters; they are the very embodiment of corruption itself.

Their corruption is twofold: they corrupt themselves through their persistent disbelief and hypocrisy, and they corrupt others by turning people away from the path of faith and righteousness. Yet, despite the gravity of their deeds, they remain oblivious — "they do not perceive it." Their hearts are sealed, their minds clouded by arrogance and self-deception, so they genuinely believe their mischief is reform. This is the deepest tragedy of their condition: not just that they do wrong, but that they are blind to their own wrongdoing, convinced they are on the right path.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every soul. How often do we, too, fall into the trap of justifying our actions, believing we are doing good when in reality we are causing harm? The hypocrites of every era share this trait — they cloak their corruption in the garments of reform. Let this verse be a mirror for self-accountability. Before you act, ask yourself: Is this truly reform, or am I deceiving myself? The Quran invites you to sincerity, to purify your intentions, and to seek the light of truth. For the one who sincerely turns to Allah, He grants clarity of vision and the ability to distinguish between true reform and hidden corruption. Do not let pride blind you — humble yourself before your Lord, and He will guide your heart to what is right.

📜 Verse 10-14 — Al-Baqarah

In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.
And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers."
Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.
And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.
And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers."
