Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(We will surely test you): We will certainly try and examine you.
  • الْخَوْفِ (fear): Terror and apprehension, particularly from enemies.
  • الْجُوعِ (hunger): Scarcity of food and famine.
  • نَقْصٍ مِنَ الْأَمْوَالِ (loss of wealth): Diminution through loss, destruction, or difficulty in earning.
  • الْأَنفُسِ (lives): Loss of souls through death, martyrdom, or calamities.
  • الثَّمَرَاتِ (fruits): Shortage in agricultural produce and harvests.
  • الصَّابِرِينَ (the patient ones): Those who endure trials with steadfast faith and without complaint.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Most Merciful, declares with absolute certainty that He will test this nation — the followers of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — with a portion of trials and tribulations, not to afflict them for the sake of punishment, but to distinguish the truthful from the false, and to elevate the ranks of the believers. This testing is a divine sunnah (established practice) that has applied to all nations before.

The trials mentioned are varied and comprehensive:

  • Fear: The terror of enemies and the anxiety that grips the heart when facing threats to one's faith, family, or homeland.
  • Hunger: Times of famine, drought, and scarcity of provisions that test a person's patience and reliance on Allah.
  • Loss of wealth: Money that diminishes through business losses, natural disasters, theft, or the difficulty of earning a lawful livelihood.
  • Loss of lives: The death of loved ones, or the sacrifice of one's own life in the path of Allah — martyrdom being the highest form of this test.
  • Loss of fruits and produce: Crops that fail, harvests that are destroyed by pests or calamities, and orchards that yield less than expected.

These trials come in degrees — "a little" — so that they remain bearable and serve as reminders rather than destruction. They are not random; they are precisely measured by divine wisdom to purify souls, awaken consciences, and teach reliance upon Allah alone.

Then comes the glorious glad tiding: "And give glad tidings to the patient ones." This is a direct address to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to announce the good news to those who remain steadfast. The glad tidings are not merely for this world — where patience brings honor, contentment, and divine support — but above all, for the Hereafter, where the patient will receive their reward without measure, as mentioned elsewhere in the Qur'an: "Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account" (Az-Zumar 39:10).

A Call to Faith and Reflection:

Dear believer, when trials strike — whether fear, hunger, loss, or grief — know that they are not signs of Allah's displeasure, but rather marks of His love and care. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial. Verily, when Allah loves a people, He tests them. Whoever accepts that wins His pleasure, and whoever is discontent earns His wrath" (At-Tirmidhi).

So when the waves of hardship crash upon you, stand firm. Let your heart anchor itself in the certainty that Allah never abandons His servants. Every tear shed, every moment of patience, every prayer whispered in the dark — all are being recorded and will be rewarded beyond your imagination. The Paradise that awaits the patient is a reward that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can conceive.

Be among the patient ones, and let the glad tidings fill your heart with hope and tranquility. For after every difficulty comes ease, and with every trial comes a hidden mercy — if only you would see it with the eyes of faith.

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allah, "They are dead." Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not.
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return."
Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
