Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most High, declares that the two hills of As-Safa and Al-Marwah — located to the east of the Sacred House in Mecca — are among the prominent sacred symbols of His religion. They are not remnants of ignorance or paganism, as some Muslims had mistakenly feared after embracing Islam. Rather, Allah Himself has appointed them as places of worship and devotion, making the Sa‘i (the ritual walking) between them an integral part of His divine rites.
Therefore, whoever intends the Sacred House for Hajj (the major pilgrimage) or for ‘Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage) bears no sin or blame in performing the Sa‘i between these two hills. In fact, it is an obligation upon them to do so. The verse’s phrasing — “no sin upon him” — was a reassurance to those early Muslims who felt hesitant, thinking that the Sa‘i was a practice inherited from the pre-Islamic era of idolatry. Allah removed this hesitation by clarifying that this rite is from His own sacred ordinances, a beautiful act of worship that connects the believer to the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim and his wife Hajar, peace be upon them.
Then Allah adds a general principle: whoever voluntarily performs good deeds — whether extra acts of worship, charity, or any righteous work — with sincerity and devotion, then indeed Allah is Shākir (the Most Appreciative). He accepts the deed, multiplies its reward, and gives generously from His boundless bounty. He is ‘Alīm (the All-Knowing), fully aware of every intention and every action, and He never lets a single atom’s weight of good go to waste.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear believer, see how Allah, in His infinite mercy, transforms what might seem like a simple walk between two hills into a profound act of worship that carries the fragrance of Prophetic history. The Sa‘i between Safa and Marwah is a living reminder of Hajar’s trust in Allah when she ran between these hills seeking water for her infant son — and Allah answered her with the blessed well of Zamzam. This rite teaches us that no act of sincere devotion is insignificant in Allah’s sight, and that He never abandons those who turn to Him.
And what a beautiful promise this verse carries: Allah is Shākir — He thanks His servants for their deeds! Imagine the Creator of the heavens and the earth expressing gratitude for your small acts of goodness. How generous is our Lord, Who rewards the little with the immense, and Who knows the purity of your heart when you give, pray, or strive in His path. So never underestimate your good deeds, no matter how small they appear. A kind word, a helping hand, a voluntary prayer, a step toward the House of Allah — all are seen, all are recorded, and all will be repaid beyond your imagination.
Let this verse ignite in your heart a love for Allah’s rites and a longing for His House. And let it inspire you to seize every opportunity for voluntary goodness, for the All-Knowing, All-Appreciative Lord is watching, ready to shower you with His grace.
