The Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse delivers a stern and awe-inspiring warning from Allah to those who possess knowledge of the truth yet deliberately conceal it. Allah declares that those who hide what He has revealed — the clear signs, the decisive proofs, and the guidance that leads humanity to salvation — after He has made it manifest in His Books for all people, are under a devastating curse.
The primary reference here is to the scholars of the People of the Book (the Jews and Christians) who knew the truth about the final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from their own scriptures. They found his descriptions written clearly in the Torah and the Gospel, along with other divine rulings, yet they suppressed this knowledge out of envy, worldly gain, and arrogance. They chose to mislead their followers rather than guide them, and in doing so, they betrayed the very trust of prophethood and knowledge.
The verse then declares the consequence of such treachery: "Those — Allah curses them, and the cursers curse them." This means Allah expels them from His mercy, and simultaneously, all of creation — the angels, the prophets, the believers, and even the animals and inanimate objects — join in supplicating against them, saying: "O Allah, curse them." The entire universe, by its very nature, abhors the one who hides the truth and blocks the path to guidance.
This is a profound lesson for every believer, especially those who carry knowledge. Knowledge is a trust from Allah, and concealing it when it is needed is a grave sin that invites divine wrath. The scholars and callers to Islam must be the opposite: they must spread the truth with sincerity, courage, and wisdom, seeking only Allah's pleasure. They must never let fear of people, love of status, or material gain silence their tongues.
For the ordinary believer, this verse is a call to cherish the guidance of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, to seek knowledge with humility, and to share whatever good one knows — even a single verse — without hesitation. It is also a reminder of the immense mercy of Allah: He has opened the doors of guidance for us, and He loves for us to walk through them and to help others do the same. Let us not be among those who hoard the light, but rather among those who illuminate the path for others, earning the love of Allah and the prayers of His angels instead of their curses.
