Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Asma (الأسماء): The names of all things, their words and their meanings.
  • Thumma (ثُمَّ): Then, indicating sequence and elevation of status.
  • Aradahum (عَرَضَهُمْ): He presented them — referring to the named entities or beings.
  • Anbi’uni (أَنبِئُونِي): Inform Me, tell Me.
  • Sadiqin (صَادِقِينَ): Truthful — referring to the angels’ claim that they were more worthy of vicegerency.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah reveals the honor and distinction He bestowed upon Adam (peace be upon him). After creating Adam, Allah taught him the names of all things — every creature, every object, every element of creation — both their words and their meanings. This was not a mere list of labels, but a profound knowledge that encompassed the essence and reality of things, a gift that elevated Adam above all other creation.

Then, to demonstrate Adam’s superiority and to expose the truth, Allah presented these named beings to the angels and said: “Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful” — truthful in your earlier statement when you said, “Will You place upon the earth one who causes corruption and sheds blood, while we glorify Your praise and sanctify You?” (2:30). The angels had implied that they were more deserving of this honorable position, so Allah put them to the test.

The challenge was clear: if the angels were truly more knowledgeable and more worthy, they would be able to name these things. But they could not, because this knowledge was a special gift from Allah to Adam alone. This was not a test of obedience or worship, but a demonstration of the unique capacity for learning, naming, and understanding that Allah had instilled in the human being — a capacity that would enable humanity to build civilization, to communicate, to develop knowledge, and to fulfill the great trust of vicegerency on earth.

A Da’wah Reflection:

Beloved reader, ponder deeply on this magnificent scene. Allah, the Lord of all worlds, personally taught Adam the names of all things. This is the origin of human knowledge and learning — a divine gift, not a human invention. Every language you speak, every science you study, every invention you create, every book you read — all of it traces back to this blessed moment when Allah honored humanity with the gift of knowledge.

This verse carries a profound message for every human being: you are created for greatness. You are not a random accident in the universe; you are a creature honored by Allah, taught by Allah, and chosen to carry the trust of knowledge and responsibility. The angels, who are pure light and perfect obedience, could not do what Adam did — because Allah designed humans with the potential to learn, to grow, to understand, and to excel.

So never underestimate yourself. Never think that you are too small or too weak to make a difference. Allah has placed within you the same capacity for learning that He gave to Adam. When you seek knowledge — whether it is knowledge of your religion, of the Qur’an, of the world around you — you are walking in the footsteps of your father Adam. You are using the very gift that made the angels bow in prostration to him.

And remember: the greatest knowledge of all is the knowledge of Allah Himself — His names, His attributes, His commands. Just as Adam was taught the names of all things, you are invited to learn the names of Allah, to understand His mercy, His wisdom, His love for His creation. This is the path to true success in this life and the next.

Let this verse inspire you to be a lifelong learner, to seek beneficial knowledge, and to use that knowledge to worship Allah, serve humanity, and fulfill the purpose for which you were created. For indeed, the one who knows is not like the one who does not know — and Allah elevates those who believe and those who have been given knowledge, by degrees.

📜 Verse 29-33 — Al-Baqarah

It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth. Then He directed Himself to the heaven, [His being above all creation], and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."
And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful."
They said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise."
He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed."
