Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Subḥānaka (سُبْحَانَكَ): Glory be to You; declaring Allah free from any imperfection, deficiency, or flaw.
- ʿAllamtana (عَلَّمْتَنَا): What You have taught us or granted us knowledge of.
- Al-ʿAlīm (الْعَلِيمُ): The All-Knowing; the One whose knowledge encompasses everything, hidden and apparent.
- Al-Ḥakīm (الْحَكِيمُ): The All-Wise; the One who places everything in its perfect and proper position.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Allah informed the angels of His intention to place a vicegerent on earth, they inquired with a tone of wonder: "Will You place therein one who will cause corruption and shed blood, while we glorify Your praise and sanctify You?" In response, Allah taught Adam the names of all things and then presented them to the angels, challenging them: "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful." At that moment, the angels realized their limited knowledge and humbly submitted, saying: "Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise."
In this profound statement, the angels:
- Declared Allah's absolute perfection — They exalted Him far above any shortcoming or error in His decisions, acknowledging that His wisdom surpasses all understanding.
- Acknowledged their complete dependence on Allah — They confessed that all knowledge they possessed was a gift from Him, and that their intellect alone could never grasp the divine wisdom behind His choices.
- Affirmed Allah's two magnificent attributes — His perfect knowledge (al-ʿIlm) that encompasses all things, and His perfect wisdom (al-Ḥikmah) that places everything in its rightful place.
This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every believer: true knowledge begins with humility. The angels, despite their noble status and continuous worship, did not hesitate to admit their ignorance when faced with divine wisdom. They did not argue or insist on their earlier question; rather, they surrendered completely to Allah's decree.
Dear reader, reflect on this magnificent scene. If the angels — those honored servants who never disobey Allah — declared their absolute reliance on His teaching, how much more should we, with our limited minds and imperfect understanding, submit to Allah's wisdom in all matters? When you face situations that seem confusing or difficult to understand, remember the angels' words: "We have no knowledge except what You have taught us." Trust that Allah, the All-Knowing and All-Wise, knows what is best for you, even when your heart cannot see the wisdom behind His decree.
This verse also invites you to seek knowledge sincerely, for Allah is the ultimate Teacher. He taught Adam the names of all things, and He continues to guide those who humbly seek His light. Approach your Lord with a humble heart, ask Him to increase you in beneficial knowledge, and you will find doors of understanding opening before you that you never imagined possible.
May Allah make us among those who recognize their limitations, submit to His wisdom, and continuously seek His guidance in all affairs.
