Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah honored Adam ('alayhi al-salam) with knowledge and the prostration of the angels, He granted him a magnificent residence: Paradise. Allah said to Adam: "O Adam, dwell you and your wife, Hawwa, in Paradise." This was a place of perfect peace, beauty, and endless provision. Allah gave them full permission to eat from its fruits freely and abundantly—wherever they wished, in any corner of the garden, at any time—enjoying a life of complete comfort and delight.
However, this immense blessing came with one clear command: "Do not approach this particular tree." The prohibition was not merely about eating from it; it was a test of obedience and self-restraint. By saying "do not approach," Allah taught them to stay far away from anything that could lead to sin, even if it was just being near it. The purpose was to protect them from falling into disobedience, which would make them among the wrongdoers—those who harm themselves by crossing the boundaries set by their Lord.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. Allah's commands are never restrictive out of harshness; they are protective out of love. Just as Adam was given abundant freedom in Paradise but asked to avoid one tree, we too are given countless blessings and permissible pleasures in this life, yet we are asked to avoid certain things for our own spiritual well-being. The command "do not approach" teaches us that the safest path is to stay away from doubtful matters entirely, rather than testing how close we can get to sin without falling into it. When we obey Allah, we honor ourselves; when we disobey, we only wrong our own souls. This story reminds us that Paradise is not only a place we hope for in the hereafter—it is also a state of obedience and closeness to Allah that we can taste in this life by following His guidance with love and sincerity.
