Tafsir (Explanation):
And remember, O Messenger, when your Lord said to the angels: "Prostrate yourselves before Adam" — a prostration of honor and respect, not worship, for worship is due to Allah alone. This was a divine command to show Adam’s exalted status and the superiority of his creation. The angels, in their complete obedience and submission to Allah, immediately prostrated themselves, hastening to fulfill His command without hesitation or question.
But Iblis (Satan) refused. He did not prostrate, driven by pride, envy, and arrogance. He deemed himself better than Adam, saying in his heart, "I am created from fire, and he from clay," and thus he rebelled against the explicit command of his Lord. In that very moment, his true nature was exposed — he had been concealing his disbelief, and now it became manifest. He was, and is, from among the disbelievers — those who reject Allah’s authority and disobey His decree. His refusal was not a mere lapse, but a revelation of what was already decreed in Allah’s eternal knowledge: that Iblis would be among the wretched and the condemned.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: obedience to Allah must be absolute, even when the command may seem beyond our understanding. The angels did not question why they should prostrate to a being created from clay; they simply submitted. And Iblis’s downfall began with a single act of pride — a reminder that arrogance is the root of all evil, and that humility before Allah is the key to salvation. Let this be a call to every soul: do not let your intellect, your status, or your desires prevent you from submitting to the will of your Creator. For in submission lies true honor, and in pride lies utter ruin.
