Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Kasaba sayyi'ah (كسب سيئة): Earned or committed an evil deed — specifically referring to the major sin of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and persistent disobedience that leads one away from faith.
- Ahatat bihi khati'atuhu (أحاطت به خطيئته): His sin encompassed him from all sides — meaning it completely surrounded and overwhelmed him, leaving no room for repentance or escape, until he died upon that state.
- Ashab an-Nar (أصحاب النار): Companions of the Fire — those who will dwell in Hellfire permanently.
- Khalidun (خالدون): Abiding forever — eternal, unending residence.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse comes as a decisive response to those who claimed that the Fire would not touch them except for a few days — a false hope entertained by some of the People of the Book and the polytheists. Allah refutes this notion with the emphatic word "Bala" (Yes, indeed!), establishing the truth that His judgment is certain and just.
The verse declares: Whoever earns evil deeds — and the greatest of all evil deeds is shirk, associating partners with the Creator of the heavens and the earth — and whose sins so completely surround him that they become his very nature, dominating his heart and actions until he meets his Lord upon that state, then such a person has sealed his own fate. These are the companions of the Fire, and in it they shall abide forever.
This is not a matter of wishful thinking or empty claims. Allah's justice demands that those who persist in disbelief and die upon it — having been surrounded by their transgressions with no repentance to cleanse them — receive the eternal consequence of their choice. The verse makes clear that this encompasses those who commit shirk, for no sin is greater than equating the Creator with His creation.
Yet within this stern warning lies a profound mercy: the verse implicitly teaches us that the door of repentance remains open *before* death approaches. The one whose sins have not yet completely encompassed him — who still has breath in his body and a beating heart — can turn back to Allah at any moment. The very severity of the punishment for those who persist should awaken in every soul a sincere urgency to examine their state, abandon all forms of shirk, and cling to pure monotheism.
Dear reader, reflect deeply: your Lord does not wrong anyone in the slightest. He has shown you the path clearly and warned you of the consequences of straying from it. The Fire is real, its eternity is real, and the only protection from it is sincere faith coupled with righteous deeds, sealed with a death upon Tawheed. Let this verse be a wake-up call — a blessed reminder that today you have the power to choose, but tomorrow that choice may no longer be yours. Rush to repentance, purify your belief, and let the love of Allah and His Messenger fill your heart, so that you may be among those who are saved, not among those who are surrounded by their sins.
