Word Meanings:

  • Tamassana (تَمَسَّنَا): Will touch us or afflict us.
  • Ma'doodah (مَعْدُودَةً): Counted, limited, or few in number.
  • Ahdan (عَهْدًا): A covenant, promise, or binding agreement.
  • Yukhlifa (يُخْلِفُ): To break or go against a promise.

Explanation of the Verse:

The Children of Israel made a false and arrogant claim, saying: "The Fire will not touch us except for a few numbered days." They meant that any punishment they might face in the Hereafter would be brief and temporary—perhaps referring to the forty days their ancestors worshipped the calf—and then it would end, and they would be saved. This was a delusion born of pride and wishful thinking, with no basis in divine revelation.

Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to refute this claim with a decisive question: "Have you taken a covenant from Allah?" In other words, did Allah Himself promise you this? If such a promise truly existed, then Allah would never break His word—for His promises are absolute and true. But since no such covenant exists, the second part of the question exposes their deception: "Or do you say about Allah what you do not know?" This is a stinging rebuke, for they were attributing to Allah things He never said, fabricating falsehoods and speaking without knowledge.

The verse teaches us a profound lesson: no one can claim special treatment from Allah without evidence. Salvation is not inherited by lineage or based on empty boasts—it is earned through sincere faith, righteous deeds, and obedience to Allah's commands. The Jews of that time believed they were the "chosen people" and that their ancestry alone would save them, but Allah makes it clear that His judgment is just and based on truth, not on false pretensions.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful reminder for all of us, regardless of background. It warns us against complacency and false security. Some people today might think: "I am a Muslim, so I am guaranteed Paradise," or "I come from a religious family, so I am safe." But Allah judges us by our own deeds, not by the deeds of our ancestors. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever slows down his deeds, his lineage will not speed him up" (Sahih Muslim).

Let this verse inspire you to rely on your own relationship with Allah—through prayer, charity, honesty, and seeking His forgiveness. Do not make claims about Allah's mercy without acting in ways that deserve it. And never speak about Allah without knowledge, for that is a grave sin. Instead, humble yourself before Him, ask for His guidance, and strive to be among those who truly know Him and worship Him with sincerity. The door of repentance is always open, and His mercy is vast—but it is granted to those who seek it with truthfulness, not to those who presume upon it with false claims.

📜 Verse 78-82 — Al-Baqarah

And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scripture except in wishful thinking, but they are only assuming.
So woe to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.
And they say, "Never will the Fire touch us, except for a few days." Say, "Have you taken a covenant with Allah? For Allah will never break His covenant. Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?"
Yes, whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.
But they who believe and do righteous deeds - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.
