Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Anastu" (آنَسْتُ): I perceived/saw with clear sight.
  • "Biqabas" (بِقَبَسٍ): A flame or a burning ember taken from the fire's edge — a spark or torch to kindle another fire.
  • "Hudan" (هُدًى): Guidance — here meaning a guide who could show the way.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse takes us back to the moment when Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) was journeying with his family, having fled from Egypt. In the darkness of the night, during a cold and unfamiliar terrain, he suddenly caught sight of a fire in the distance. This was no ordinary fire — it was a divine sign prepared by Allah, though Musa did not yet know it.

With the tenderness of a caring husband and father, Musa turned to his family and said: "Stay here in this place. I have seen a fire. Perhaps I can bring you from it a burning brand so you may warm yourselves and cook, or perhaps I will find at that fire someone who can guide us on our path."

Notice the beautiful character of this Prophet of Allah: even in a moment of uncertainty, his first thought was for the comfort and safety of his family. He did not abandon them or leave them confused — he reassured them, gave them clear instructions, and set out with a noble intention: to serve them and to seek what would benefit them.

Little did he know that this fire was not a worldly flame, but the light of prophethood calling him to a mission that would change history. Allah chose this moment of sincere care and humble seeking to transform Musa from a fugitive into a Messenger.

This scene teaches us profound lessons: that Allah often meets His servants at their moments of sincere effort and concern for others. That seeking guidance — whether for a physical journey or a spiritual one — is a praiseworthy pursuit. And that the believer, in every situation, should combine practical action with trust in Allah.

How beautiful it is when a person's daily struggles — even something as simple as seeking fire for warmth — become the gateway to divine revelation and honor. This is the mercy of Allah: He takes our ordinary efforts and elevates them to extraordinary encounters with His light, when our hearts are sincere and our intentions pure.

Dear reader, reflect on your own life: perhaps the very difficulty you face today, the "fire" you are seeking in the darkness of your circumstances, is Allah's way of drawing you closer to Him. Perhaps your need is the beginning of your guidance. Open your heart, and you may find that what appears to be a small flame is actually the light of Allah calling you to a greater purpose.
