Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Tayyibat (طَيِّبَات): Pure, wholesome, and lawful provisions that are good and beneficial.
  • Tatghaw (تَطْغَوْا): To transgress, exceed boundaries, or act arrogantly and unjustly.
  • Yahilla (يَحِلَّ): To become due or descend upon someone.
  • Hawā (هَوَى): To perish, fall into ruin, or be destroyed.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, in His boundless mercy and generosity, addresses His servants with a gracious invitation: "Eat from the pure and wholesome provisions We have granted you." This is a reminder that all sustenance comes from Allah alone, and He has made it lawful and beneficial for us. The word *tayyibat* encompasses not only food that is halal but also that which is clean, nourishing, and free from harm—both physically and spiritually.

Yet, with this blessing comes a solemn warning: "And do not transgress therein." This means do not overstep the limits Allah has set. Transgression can take many forms: consuming what is forbidden, indulging in excess and wastefulness, becoming arrogant and ungrateful, or depriving others of their rights. It is a call to balance, gratitude, and moderation in all that we consume and enjoy.

The consequence of such transgression is severe: "So that My wrath descends upon you." Allah’s wrath is not arbitrary; it is the natural outcome of defying His guidance and abusing His blessings. And when His wrath befalls a person, the result is utter ruin: "And whoever descends upon him My wrath has indeed fallen into destruction." This destruction is not merely physical but encompasses loss in this life and the Hereafter—a state of spiritual and eternal failure.

This verse is a profound reminder of the delicate relationship between divine blessings and human responsibility. Allah does not forbid us from enjoying His provisions; rather, He invites us to enjoy them within the framework of His guidance. The path of gratitude and obedience leads to peace and success, while the path of transgression leads to loss and regret.

As believers, let us reflect on this beautiful call: Allah has provided for us out of His love, and He asks only that we use His gifts with mindfulness and gratitude. Let us not turn His blessings into a means of our own downfall. Instead, let us savor the goodness He has given, share it with others, and remain steadfast within His boundaries—so that we may earn His pleasure and avoid His wrath. Indeed, the one who lives in obedience to Allah finds true happiness, and the one who strays loses everything. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from His wrath.

O Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you at the right side of the mount, and We sent down to you manna and quails,

[Allah] said, "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
