Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Al-Mann (المن): A sweet, honey-like substance that Allah sent down from the sky as food for the Children of Israel in the wilderness.
- As-Salwa (السلوى): A type of quail or small bird with delicious meat that Allah provided for them.
- At-Tur (الطور): The mountain, specifically Mount Sinai, where Allah spoke to Prophet Musa (Moses) and gave him the Torah.
- Al-Ayman (الأيمن): The right side, signifying a place of honor and blessing.
The Interpretation:
Allah, the Most Merciful, addresses the Children of Israel, reminding them of His immense favors upon them. He calls them to remember the great deliverance He granted them when He saved them from their enemy, Pharaoh, who had enslaved and persecuted them. By His divine power, He parted the sea and made a dry path for them, then drowned Pharaoh and his army before their very eyes. This was a profound act of salvation, a testament to His care for them.
Then, Allah reminds them of another honor: He made a covenant with them, promising Musa (peace be upon him) that he would come to the right side of Mount Sinai for a sacred meeting. There, Allah spoke to him directly and revealed the Torah, a guidance and a light for the people. This was not merely a promise; it was a divine appointment that elevated their status and gave them a complete way of life.
And in the vast, barren desert of Tih, where no food could grow, Allah’s mercy followed them. He rained down from the sky Al-Mann, a sweet, honey-like substance, and provided them with As-Salwa, a delicious bird, so they could eat and be nourished. They did not have to till the land or struggle for sustenance; Allah provided for them in a miraculous way, showing them that He is the ultimate Provider.
This verse is a powerful reminder for all of us. Just as Allah saved the Children of Israel and provided for them, He is the One who saves us from our own difficulties and provides for us in ways we cannot imagine. When you feel trapped by your circumstances, remember that the same Lord who parted the sea can open a way out for you. When you feel lost in a wilderness of worry, remember that He can send you sustenance from where you least expect it. The story of the Children of Israel is not just history; it is a living lesson in trusting Allah’s promise. So turn to Him, be grateful for His countless blessings, and know that His mercy is always near, ready to guide you and provide for you, just as He did for those who came before us.
