Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ālihah (آلِهَةً): Gods or deities worshipped besides Allah.
  • Burhān (بُرْهَانَكُمْ): Clear proof, evidence, or argument.
  • Dhikr (ذِكْرُ): Reminder, admonition, or revelation.
  • Muʿriḍūn (مُعْرِضُونَ): Turning away, averse, or heedless.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse addresses a profound reality: the polytheists of Makkah claimed that their idols were deities worthy of worship, yet they had no basis for this claim whatsoever. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, challenges them with a rhetorical question that exposes the emptiness of their belief: "Have they taken gods besides Him?" The very phrasing carries a tone of astonishment and rebuke—how could anyone, having witnessed the majesty of creation, attribute divinity to lifeless stones or powerless beings?

The command that follows is both a challenge and an invitation: "Say: Bring forth your proof!" This is a call to intellectual honesty. If you claim these idols are gods, then present evidence—from reason, from revelation, or from reality itself. But where would such proof come from? The Quran, which was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is a reminder and admonition for those who followed him, and the earlier scriptures—the Torah, the Gospel, and all previous revelations—were reminders for those who came before. None of these divine books ever sanctioned the worship of anyone or anything besides Allah. In fact, every single prophet was sent with the same core message: "Worship Allah alone."

So, let the seeker of truth reflect: if all the heavenly books, from the first to the last, agree on pure monotheism, then where do these false gods come from? They are nothing but inventions of human ignorance and blind imitation of ancestors. The verse concludes with a piercing diagnosis: "But most of them do not know the truth, so they turn away." Their problem is not a lack of intelligence, but a lack of sincere seeking. They have closed their hearts to the truth and turned their faces away from it, preferring the comfort of tradition over the light of certainty.

This verse is a timeless reminder for every soul: truth does not require blind acceptance—it invites examination. Islam does not fear questions; it welcomes them. The Quran challenges humanity to think, to reason, and to seek evidence. And when one honestly searches, they will find that the message of Islam—the worship of the One True God—is the very message that echoes through every scripture and every prophet. So, open your heart, use your intellect, and let the truth guide you to the peace that comes from knowing your Creator.

📜 Verse 22-26 — Al-Anbiya

Had there been within the heavens and earth gods besides Allah, they both would have been ruined. So exalted is Allah, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.
He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned.
Or have they taken gods besides Him? Say, [O Muhammad], "Produce your proof. This [Qur'an] is the message for those with me and the message of those before me." But most of them do not know the truth, so they are turning away.
And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that, "There is no deity except Me, so worship Me."
And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken a son." Exalted is He! Rather, they are [but] honored servants.
