Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Yakhshawna (يَخْشَوْنَ): They fear with profound reverence and awe, a fear that stems from love and consciousness of Allah’s greatness, not merely terror.
- Bil-Ghayb (بِالْغَيْبِ): In the unseen — meaning they fear Allah even though they do not see Him with their physical eyes; their faith is based on the unseen, not on direct vision.
- Mushfiqoon (مُشْفِقُونَ): Deeply anxious and fearful, with a sense of caution and alertness, as one who is wary of an impending danger.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes the true qualities of the righteous — those who are described as "muttaqoon" (the God-conscious). They are the people who fear their Lord in the unseen, meaning they worship Him and obey His commands even when no one sees them, and even when they cannot perceive Him with their eyes. Their fear is not a mere display for others; it is a genuine, heartfelt reverence that drives them to avoid sin in private just as they would in public. They know that Allah sees them at all times, and this awareness fills their hearts with awe and devotion.
Furthermore, they are deeply concerned about the Hour — the Day of Judgment. Their hearts tremble at the thought of that great day, with its terrors and trials. This fear is not a paralyzing despair, but a motivating force that pushes them to prepare for that day through righteous deeds, repentance, and seeking Allah’s mercy. They live their lives with a sense of urgency and purpose, knowing that the Hereafter is the true life.
This verse teaches us that true faith is not merely a claim on the tongue; it is a reality in the heart that manifests in action. The believer who fears Allah in secret and is mindful of the Last Day is the one who will attain success and tranquility in this world and the next.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, imagine a life where you are always aware that Allah sees you, hears you, and knows your innermost thoughts. Would you still persist in sin? Would you still neglect your prayers? This verse invites you to cultivate this beautiful quality of *khashyah* — a reverent fear of Allah that fills your heart with love and awe. It is the key to peace in this life and salvation in the Hereafter.
The Hour is closer than you think. Every day that passes brings you nearer to that moment when you will stand before your Lord. Let this awareness awaken you from heedlessness. Turn to Allah now, with a sincere heart, and ask Him to make you among those who fear Him in the unseen and who are mindful of the Last Day. For indeed, the greatest success is to be among those whom Allah describes with these noble qualities — the people of taqwa, who will be honored with His mercy and Paradise.
