Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Furqan (الْفُرْقَانَ): The criterion that distinguishes between truth and falsehood, right and wrong. It refers here to the Torah and the decisive proof and victory granted to Moses and Aaron.
- Dhiya’an (ضِيَاءً): A light or illumination—meaning the Torah, which served as a radiant guide and a source of enlightenment for those who followed it.
- Dhikran (ذِكْرًا): A reminder, admonition, or exhortation—a means of awakening hearts and directing them toward Allah.
- Lil-Muttaqin (لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ): For the God-conscious, those who are mindful of Allah, fear His punishment, and strive to obey His commands.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah reminds us of His immense favor upon two of His greatest prophets—Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them). He bestowed upon them Al-Furqan, the divine criterion that separates truth from falsehood, and with it, a decisive victory over their enemy, Pharaoh. This was not merely a book; it was a comprehensive system of guidance that illuminated the path of righteousness.
The verse further describes this gift as Dhiya’an—a radiant light. The Torah was not just a set of laws; it was a beacon of hope and direction, dispelling the darkness of ignorance and oppression. It guided the Children of Israel out of the shadows of tyranny and into the light of monotheism and justice.
Moreover, it was Dhikran lil-Muttaqin—a reminder and an admonition for the God-conscious. These are the people whose hearts are alive, who fear their Lord even in secret, and who are deeply aware of the coming Hour (the Day of Judgment). For such souls, the revelation serves as a wake-up call, turning them away from worldly distractions and toward eternal success.
This verse teaches us that true guidance is a gift from Allah alone. He grants it to those who sincerely seek it, and He supports His prophets and their followers with clear proofs and victories. The Qur’an, like the Torah before it, is a living Furqan—a criterion that continues to distinguish right from wrong in every age.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, reflect on this divine pattern: Allah never leaves His servants without guidance. Just as He sent the Torah to Moses and Aaron as a light and a reminder, He has sent the Qur’an to humanity as the final and most complete revelation. Will you not open your heart to this light? Will you not let it be a reminder that awakens your soul?
The Muttaqin—those who are conscious of Allah—are the ones who truly benefit from revelation. They are not merely listeners; they are doers. They let the words of Allah transform their lives, steering them away from sin and toward righteousness. The Hour is near, and every soul will be held accountable. Let this verse inspire you to be among those who cherish Allah’s guidance, who fear His judgment, and who strive to live by His light.
Embrace the Qur’an as your Furqan, your criterion, and your light. Let it remind you of your purpose, and let it lead you to the eternal bliss of Paradise. For indeed, the greatest success belongs to those who purify themselves and remember their Lord.
