Word Meanings:

  • Fitnah (فِتْنَةً): A trial, test, or cause of deviation and confusion.
  • Those in whose hearts is disease (الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ): The hypocrites whose hearts are afflicted with doubt and skepticism.
  • Those whose hearts are hardened (الْقَاسِيَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ): The polytheists whose hearts have become rigid and unreceptive to truth.
  • Shiqāq (شِقَاقٍ): Opposition, enmity, and deep-seated discord.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse reveals a profound divine wisdom behind the trials that occur through the whispers of Satan. Allah, in His infinite knowledge and justice, allows Satan to cast his suggestions into the recitation of the Prophet (peace be upon him) — not as a failure of revelation, but as a deliberate test to distinguish the sincere believers from those with diseased hearts.

The purpose of this divine decree is to make Satan’s interference a trial for two specific groups:

  1. Those with diseased hearts — the hypocrites who harbor doubt and uncertainty. When they witness such incidents, their skepticism intensifies, and they use it as an excuse to question the Prophet’s truthfulness. Their inner sickness manifests, exposing their true nature.
  2. Those with hardened hearts — the obstinate polytheists whose hearts have become like stone, impervious to guidance. They seize upon such moments to mock and reject the message, further entrenching themselves in disbelief.

Through this trial, Allah distinguishes the pure-hearted believers — who remain steadfast and trust in their Prophet despite such whispers — from those whose faith is weak or nonexistent. The believers see these incidents as tests from Allah and increase in their conviction, while the disbelievers only sink deeper into their stubbornness.

The verse concludes with a powerful statement: "And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme opposition." This refers to both the hypocrites and the polytheists who, through their rejection and hostility, place themselves in a state of profound enmity against Allah and His Messenger. Their opposition is not merely a minor disagreement — it is a deep, far-reaching schism that distances them from truth, guidance, and ultimately from Allah’s mercy.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every soul. Allah tests His servants in various ways — sometimes through trials that seem confusing or even contradictory. But the believer who holds firmly to Allah’s rope understands that every test is a means of purification and elevation. When doubts arise, do not let them shake your foundation; instead, turn to Allah with sincerity, for He is the One who guides hearts and protects them from the whispers of Satan.

The hypocrites and the hard-hearted failed this test because they approached it with arrogance and prejudice. But you — you have the opportunity to approach every trial with humility and trust in Allah. Let your heart be soft, receptive, and eager for truth. Do not let Satan’s whispers become a stumbling block; rather, let them become a stepping stone toward greater faith and closeness to your Lord.

Remember: The wrongdoers’ opposition only harms themselves. Their distance from truth is their own loss. But those who remain steadfast, who purify their hearts and seek Allah’s guidance, will find that every trial — no matter how difficult — becomes a means of drawing nearer to Him and attaining His eternal pleasure.

📜 Verse 51-55 — Al-Hajj

But the ones who strove against Our verses, [seeking] to cause failure - those are the companions of Hellfire.
And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he spoke [or recited], Satan threw into it [some misunderstanding]. But Allah abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allah makes precise His verses. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in a trial for those within whose hearts is disease and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.
And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.
But those who disbelieve will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly or there comes to them the punishment of a barren Day.
