Explanation of the Verse:
After describing the joy and eternal bliss of those whose scales are heavy with faith and righteous deeds, Allah now turns to the opposite fate — a stark warning that shakes the heart. He says: "And whoever’s scales are light" — meaning their good deeds are outweighed by their sins, especially the gravest of all: shirk (associating partners with Allah) and disbelief. These are the people who have "lost their own selves" — a profound loss indeed, for they have traded eternal happiness for everlasting misery, and their souls, which were created to know and worship their Lord, have been wasted on that which brings nothing but ruin.
They have harmed themselves by following their desires, neglecting the commands of Allah, and turning away from the truth brought by the messengers. They did not merely fail; they actively destroyed their own most precious possession — their soul — by filling it with corruption and emptying it of faith. And their destination? "In Hellfire they will abide forever." This is not a temporary punishment, but an eternal one, because the crime of rejecting the Creator and His guidance is an infinite offense against the Infinite.
The weighing of deeds is a reality that Allah has established to demonstrate justice in a way that all people can understand, using the custom of weighing goods in trade. It is a perfect, precise measure — no deed is too small to be weighed, and no soul will be treated unfairly. On that Day, the scales will not lie, and every person will see the exact value of what they sent forward in this life.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and consider: what will your scale look like on that Day? The good news is that you are still alive, still breathing, and the door of repentance is wide open. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given you this very moment to tip the balance in your favor. Every sincere prayer, every act of kindness, every tear shed in humility before your Lord, every step taken toward good — all of it is being recorded and will be placed on your scale.
Do not let your scale be light. The heaviest thing that can be placed upon it is faith in Allah and love for His Messenger ﷺ, followed by righteous deeds done with sincerity. Even a single date given in charity, a kind word, or removing a harmful object from the road can tip the balance. So race toward good, repent from your sins, and hold firmly to the rope of Allah. Let today be the day you decide that your scale will be heavy — not with the weight of worldly possessions, but with the weight of deeds that will carry you safely across the bridge to eternal Paradise.
