Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses a grave matter — the accusation made against the Mother of the Believers, ʿĀ'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), during the incident of the slander (al-Ifk). Allah, the Most High, rebukes those who spread this vile rumor, asking them: Why did they not bring four witnesses to support their serious accusation? In Islamic law, any claim of adultery or immoral conduct requires four upright witnesses who testify to having seen the act with their own eyes. This is an impossibly high standard — and that is precisely the point. It is meant to protect the honor and dignity of believers, especially the pure and chaste.

When the slanderers failed to produce even a single witness — let alone four — Allah declared their fate: "Then when they did not bring the witnesses, they are — in Allah's sight — the liars." This means that regardless of what they believed or claimed among themselves, their words carried no weight before Allah. They were judged as liars because they spoke about something they could not prove, and they violated the divine command that prohibits accusing others without proper evidence.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: The tongue is a trust, and words have consequences. Islam does not allow a person to destroy another's reputation based on suspicion, hearsay, or malice. If a person cannot bring proof for a serious accusation, then they are considered a liar in the sight of Allah — even if they were internally convinced of their own claim. This is because Allah has made the protection of honor a sacred right, and He has closed every door that leads to slander and defamation.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your own conduct. How often do we hear a rumor and pass it on without verification? How often do we damage a person's reputation with a single careless word? This verse teaches us that Allah takes honor and justice seriously. He has set clear boundaries to protect society from corruption and malice.

If you find yourself tempted to speak about someone's fault, remember: Where are your four witnesses? If you cannot bring them, then you are — in Allah's sight — among the liars. And what a terrible title that is!

The beauty of Islam is that it builds a society based on trust, dignity, and mutual respect. When you guard your tongue, you are not only protecting others — you are protecting your own standing before Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

So, hold fast to this noble teaching. Be among those who defend honor, who speak only with proof, and who seek justice with wisdom. For Allah loves those who are just, and He is the Protector of the innocent and the Judge of the oppressors. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from the whispers of Shaytan.

📜 Verse 11-15 — An-Nur

Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof - for him is a great punishment.
Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of one another and say, "This is an obvious falsehood"?
Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allah, who are the liars.
And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, you would have been touched for that [lie] in which you were involved by a great punishment
When you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allah, tremendous.
